š Happy Friday! Want to feel happier? Put up your Christmas tree in November. According to Psychologist Deborah Serani, people who put up their Christmas tree in November tend to be happier, as early decorating can boost mood by creating a sense of nostalgia, excitement for the holidays, and a positive association with the festive season. āChristmas decorating will spike dopamine, a feel-good hormone,ā she said.

Kuemper Student And UI Children's Hospital Patient, Austin Molhoff, Hosts Toy/Supply Drive For Other Kids And Families At The Hospital

A Kuemper Catholic student is hosting a supply drive to collect toys for children receiving treatment at the University of Iowa Childrenās Hospital, where he first became a patient when he was an infant. Austin Mollhoff, who is now 8, was just 10 months old when he was diagnosed with a rare brain cancer, craniopharyngioma. His mother, Jen Mollhoff, says Austin has undergone countless surgeries and treatments over the last eight years. Rather than dwell on the challenges of childhood cancer, Austin is instead focusing on the other patients in the hospital. Mollhoff says her son is collecting all sorts of items, from toys for the children in the hospital to support materials for their parents. Theyāve put together a wish list online for people to look at items and quickly order. Mollhoff says people can drop off donations through Nov. 22. Austin will then deliver the items to the University of Iowa Childrenās Hospital later this month.
Links to Austin Mollhoffās supply and toy drive are included below. Mollhoff says Austin would be ecstatic to bring piles of donated gifts to the kids receiving treatment at the hospital, and every contribution makes a difference for a patient and their family.

šØ On Election night, Sac County Sheriffās Office placed a $10.9 million bond to construct a new jail and update the law enforcement facility. The measure needed to pass with 60 percent of votes in favor of the bond, just shy of that by a mere 1.21 percent. McClure says, āAt first glance, this appears to be a failure. Likewise, this result also tells us that 58.79 percent of those who voted yesterday (Tuesday) did vote yes to develop our infrastructure to keep our staff and community safe.ā This was the first attempt to pass the referendum, which was estimated to raise taxes by approximately $0.058 per $1,000 of taxable assessed valuation. McClure wants to thank the Board of Supervisors for putting this measure for a public vote, and supporting the project. He adds, āWe will continue to find a solution that is fiscally responsible and will mitigate liabilities for Sac County taxpayers. In the days and weeks to come, we will be reevaluating what our next steps will be to ensure the ongoing safety of our community.ā

The 2024 Carroll Firemenās Dance is this weekend, and supporters still have time to purchase tickets or donate in support of the Carroll Fire Department. Fire Chief Dan Hannasch says the volunteer firefighters have already wrapped up their door-to-door sales throughout town, but that doesnāt mean residents have missed out on joining the department for a night of fun at the Carrollton Centre. Hannasch understands not everybody will be able to join them Saturday night during the Carroll Firemenās Dance, but they have other ways for people to support the local department. Carrollās department is almost entirely made up of volunteers, and the money raised ensures they are outfitted with the equipment they need to respond to all types of emergencies, from car accidents and field fires to hazardous material spills and carbon monoxide alarms. This year marks the 102nd annual Carroll Firemenās Dance. Doors open at 7 p.m. at the Carrollton Centre, with entertainment provided by Third Wish. If you would still like to send donations to the department here are a few ways you can do that.

Estimated 2M gallons of wastewater discharged in Sioux City, some reached Missouri River
Cami Koons

The Bacon Creek Channel was reported to be dry before an equipment failure caused a wastewater discharge into the channel which flows into the Missouri River. (Photo via Google Maps)
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources responded to a wastewater spill in Sioux City, where an estimated 2 million gallons of untreated wastewater spilled into the Bacon Creek Channel, which flows into the Missouri River.
No fish kills have been observed, and according to a press release, the creek channel was dry prior to the equipment failure at a nearby lift station where the spill occurred.
Scott Wilson, the supervisor for the DNR field office in Spencer that received the call, said the dry channel would have minimized the amount of untreated wastewater that could have reached the Missouri River.
It also means DNR does not have an estimated amount of discharge that entered the Missouri River.
Wilson said there was no visible impact to the river but the department has advised recreational users to exercise caution downstream.
āBetter safe than sorry,ā Wilson said. read more
