The S&P 500 fell 0.4% and the Nasdaq 100 gave back 0.5% while the Russell 2000 outperformed with a 0.2% advance. The benchmark US index has now declined for five straight sessions, tying its longest losing streak since April 2024.

Every S&P 500 sector ETF declined outside of the commodity-linked energy and materials groups, with consumer staples faring the worst. That was in large part due to Walmart, which dropped 4.5% after the mega retailer missed quarterly earnings expectations for the first time in three years. Declines were led by First Solar, which fell 7%.

Paramount Skydance was a bright spot on the tape, jumping 14.6% as call option activity surged. Separately, the newly formed media giant is facing scrutiny in Washington.

Meta shares fell about 1.2% after The Wall Street Journal reported that the tech giant is freezing new AI hires without express permission from the company’s chief AI officer.

Coty shares sank 21.4% as investors digested the beauty conglomerate’s disappointing Q4 results, including a surprise profit loss.

Shares of Cracker Barrel dipped 7% as the Southern-themed restaurant chain’s new minimalist logo design sparked a flood of criticism from fans online.

Hertz shares fell 2.5% after Congress requested a meeting with officials to discuss the company’s controversial use of AI damage scanners.

Nio shares rose 9% following the popular Chinese EV maker unveiling the latest model of its ES8 electric SUV, which has begun presales.

HP Enterprise shares were up 3.7% after Morgan Stanley upgraded the stock, raising its rating to “overweight” (or buy) from “neutral,” and hiked its its price target to $28 from $22.

CoreWeave shares were up as much as 3% in premarket trading before closing the day largely flat, after quantitative trading and market-making firm Jane Street revealed a 5.4% stake in the company.

🙏 A Lake City mother is raising awareness and fundraising for a cure for a pregnancy complication after her own personal experience of the “awful disease”. Walk Coordinator and preeclampsia survivor, Kimberlyn Slagle had her son on March 30, 2024 at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City. During labor, Slagle’s blood pressure spiked and a urine analysis came back with high levels of protein, both indicators of preeclampsia. Slagle stayed a few extra days in the hospital and was sent home with a low-dose blood pressure medicine when levels started looking more stable. Slagle says her journey to start the “Lake City Promise Walk” event began when she was trying to find support groups online for individuals diagnosed or who have suffered with preeclampsia. The Lake City Promise Walk is this Saturday, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the city square. There is no registration fee and all are welcome to participate in the 5K. Slagle says there will be a short presentation before the walk begins. Slagle says they wanted to make this event as family-friendly as possible, because it’s not just the mother who is diagnosed that is affected, and family members also deserve support as well. Slagle says all money raised will be donated to the Preeclampsia Foundation for various programs, research and more. Again, Slagle welcomes all to the first annual Lake City Promise Walk for Preeclampsia this Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday is also the national day for the Wherever Promise Walk. So if individuals cannot make it to Lake City, a picture can be taken, posted on social medial with #PromiseWalk to promote support for the effort. Anyone wishing to gather more information can view the Preeclampsia Foundation Facebook page or the Lake City Promise Walk Facebook page.

🐮 A Lytton teen brought home the People’s Choice Award from the 2025 Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair earlier this month. The show has been hosted for the past 43 years and was created to support non-profit organizations that benefit Iowans. This year’s show raised $569,000 for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa, which provides food and shelter for families whose children need to travel for medical care. The event is hosted by the Office of the Governor of Iowa, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, and the Iowa Beef Industry Council. Tucker Freimuth of Lytton showed a steer named “Burt Reynolds” alongside Iowa Corn Promotion Board President Ralph Lents and brought home the People’s Choice Award. Other locals participating in the charity show included Kennedy Eischeid of Manning, who showed “Mickey” alongside Lt. Gov. Chris Cournoyer. Since 1983, the Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show has raised nearly $6 million for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa.

The St. John’s Catholic Church in Arcadia is celebrating a significant milestone, 150 years in the community, and inviting all out for packed-full weekend event at the end of this month. Aug. 29 though the 31, St. John’s has activities planned to suit all ages for a fun community gathering. Amber Hoffman, a chairman of the organizing committee, says the weekend gets underway that Friday with a reunion to bring everyone back. Saturday has activities from 8 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. with something for everyone. Saturday night will wrap up with a live and silent auction and a street dance featuring Wild Ambition from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Hoffman says they are grateful for all of the wonderful auction items available to bid on, donated from local businesses and individuals. The weekend will wrap up on Sunday with mass at noon at St. John’s, with a Staley’s Chicken dinner following the service at the Church Hall. The cash raffle drawing will be the grand finale of the event; raffle tickets can be purchased by calling the church at 712-689-2595 or messaging the St. John’s Catholic Church 150th Celebration Facebook page. Hoffman says this milestone would not be possible without the support from parishioners and hopes all come out to celebrate. Again, St. John’s Catholic Church’s 150th Celebration is Aug. 29 through 31 in Arcadia. The complete schedule and additional details can be found on their Facebook page.

First in Iowa mountain bike park opens in Mason City

A ribbon cutting was held this morning for major components of the Prairie Rock Trails Bike Park in Mason City.

The first-of-its-kind in Iowa mountain bike park connects riders to more than 20 miles of trails and 600 acres of scenic parkland.

Mayor Bill Schickel says the project was made possible through a $4.5-million Destination Iowa Grant, transforming the former Decker packing plant site that closed in 1975 and remained undeveloped for decades.

“We’re in this beautiful shelter house and picnic area now, and by the way it is handicapped accessible, and as you look around, you can see the jump tracks and the other tracks, and the less challenging tracks,” Schickel says, “but this is just a great place to have a picnic or view what’s going on, or just enjoy the scenery and a chance to bring our community together.”

Schickel says the nearest comparable mountain bike facility is located near Bentonville, Arkansas and it attracts more than one-thousand riders each week from across the nation.

The Mason City park covers ten acres.

“It’s incredible though. It’s the first world-class mountain bike park in Iowa, a rapidly growing sport, and we’re just excited to host everybody.”

Today’s ribbon-cutting ceremony was for the shelter house and jump track. Another ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place for the entire project at a later date.
