šŸ€ Time to retire?

😁 Happy Friday!  After years of New Year’s resolution culture, there’s growing debate about whether these yearly promises actually do more harm than good. Some argue they set unrealistic expectations and create unnecessary pressure, while others push back, claiming it’s the perfect time for a fresh start. Is it time to retire the ā€œresolutionā€ or reframe it completely?
By now, half of us have already forgotten our resolutions… the other half are just too ashamed to admit they didn’t make it past day 3. Is this really progress?

American Airlines shares plunge on a gloomy forecast — but its credit-card biz is thriving

Middle seat, last row… where American AirlinesAAL $17.02 (-8.74%) is mentally after earnings. The airline’s stock descended 9% yesterday after it unloaded a bummer forecast: it expects a larger-than-expected loss for this quarter as its costs rise. Last quarter wasn’t bad: Q4 profit surged and sales rose 5%. For the full year, it notched a record $54B in sales. But investors are focused on the flight plan and American’s direction was disappointing, especially compared to that of its rivals.

  • DeltaDAL $68.00 (-0.49%) and UnitedUAL $103.20 (-4.60%) earlier this month gave rosier-than-expected outlooks on booming demand. Delta’s longtime CEO, Ed Bastian, said he expected 2025 to be ā€œthe best financial year in our historyā€ as global travel keeps booming.

  • United unloaded a record Q4 profit that was up 64% on the year thanks to falling fuel costs. For the full year, it flew 174M passengers — also a record. Delta’s Q4 profit dropped from a year earlier, but investors boosted the stock on solid sales growth and a sunny outlook. rest of the story

Kuemper Sophomore, Emmett Juergens, Earns Trip To D.C. In VFW's "Voice Of Democracy" Essay Contest

A Kuemper Catholic sophomore, Emmett Juergens, will head to Washington, D.C., in March after winning first place in the Iowa Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) ā€œVoice of Democracyā€ essay contest. This year’s theme was ā€œIs America Today Our Forefathers’ Vision,ā€ and Juergens says it started as a class assignment. In his essay, Juergens says our nation is not quite what the founders had imagined; it is more than they could have hoped. The journey to the national contest had a few stops on the way. Juergens initially advanced by winning the local VFW Ralph G. Neppel Post #2642 contest, earning a $100 scholarship. He then won the VFW District contest, which came with another $100 scholarship. The state contest was held in Des Moines earlier this month, and Juergens placed first there as well, winning a $2,500 scholarship. Each state sends a representative to the VFW Washington Conference, scheduled for March 2 through 6, to present their entry again. The winner of the national contest receives a $35,000 college scholarship. Juergens says he is thankful for the opportunity to visit the national capital and for the chance to showcase his patriotism.

Emmett Juergens is the son of Pete and Shelli Juergens of Carroll. A copy of Juergens’ entry is included here.

The Southwest Webster Ambulance has been fundraising since 2021 to cover construction costs for a new 50’x70’x16’ facility, to accommodate the newer and larger ambulances of the present that were not developed in 1970’s when the original building was built. CEO and General Manager of WCCTA Marcie Boerner (Burner) says the $300,000 grant is provided by the USDA and the Rural Utility Service specifically funded to utility services to assist in rural development. With the $300,000 grant from USDA and a $60,000 donation from WCCTA, the SWWA is a lot closer to the $450,000 price tag for the project. Boerner says this opportunity is really a win-win for the organizations. Construction of the new facility is expected to beginning sometime this spring. Boerner says WCCTA is proud to be able to continue assisting with community projects and promote a much-needed service for the area. Once the new ambulance building is complete, SWWA will be donating the existing facility to the City of Gowrie, which plans for it to be utilized as a police station.
