😁 Happy Friday! The countdown to Thanksgiving is on! It’s the only day of the year when it’s socially acceptable to nap immediately after lunch and argue passionately over whether gravy belongs on everything. Oh, and your Black Friday survival skills might be more important than your stretchy pants.

Tesla jumps amid AI bullishness as analyst says Full Self-Driving software is “already better at driving than the average American”
Tesla is betting that it can turn its consumer vehicles into autonomous cars faster than Google’s Waymo can roll out new vehicles.

TeslaTSLA $399.01 (-1.23%) is up sharply today, with investors and Wall Street looking more bullish on AI, at least for the moment.
That seems to include Piper Sandler analyst Alexander Potter, who wrote that Tesla’s latest Full Self-Driving software “is a truly impressive product that is (probably) already better at driving than the average American.”
Investors are hoping that Tesla can turn its consumer vehicles into autonomous cars faster than Google’sGOOGL $291.07 (-0.59%) Waymo can roll out its robotaxis.
“There are millions of cars out there that, with a software update, become Full Self-Driving cars,” CEO Elon Musk said on the company’s recent earnings call. Potter, after attending an investor meeting at Tesla’s Fremont plant, also beamed about a “flawless robotaxi ride to the hotel,” and reiterated his $500 price target.
Waymo currently operates its autonomous service with more than 2,500 vehicles in five markets, and has plans to expand to more than 20. Just this morning, it announced planned expansion to Minneapolis, Tampa, and New Orleans.
Meanwhile, Musk has said he expects Tesla to operate 1,500 cars in its two markets, Austin and the Bay Area (where a safety monitor is present in the cars), by the end of the year, when it claims the service will be available in a total of 8 to 10 markets.
After getting drubbed recently, AI and tech companies are getting a broad lift following Nvidia’sNVDA $181.88 (-2.49%) blowout earnings yesterday, which also helped push Google to a record high.

🏕 It may look like just an ordinary camper, but a new educational experience through the Manning Regional Healthcare Center (MRHC), is planning to show the many hidden places for drugs and alcohol. Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) is an education program initiated through Alliance of Coalitions For Change (AC4C) to show parents, law enforcement, teachers and community members every day items that are actually containers that have compartments to conceal various substances. Executive Director for MRHC’s Recover Center, Taya Vonnahme says the prevention program offered through the center participated in the HIPS Backpack presentations at various schools in the area, but were wanting to establish something that more represented a home. Vonnahme says that Iowa leads the country for binge drinking, and other substances being seen include cocaine, fentanyl, and a horse tranquilizer, Zylazine. She says the Recovery Center applied and was awarded $29,000 through the Carroll County’s Opiate Settlement Fund, which paid for the camper and the supplies inside, which were very easily purchased. The MRHC camper will be parked at the hospital for the winter months, but Vonnahme says there are already presentations scheduled for next spring. She says the plan is to get out to county fairs, schools for staff trainings, and various places around the region educating adults ages 21 and over. The Hidden in Plain Sight Camper was the idea of MRHC Prevention Coordinator Neeka Jacobsen and helped put together by staff at the recovery center. Any organization, business or individual interested in scheduling a presentation can contact Jacobsen at 712-655-8280 or email at [email protected].

Central College renovates student center with Fred Maytag Family Foundation gift

Central College is using a more than $700,000 donation from the Fred Maytag Family Foundation for facility renovations and new offerings aimed at supporting students and bringing campus and community closer together.
The Pella private university announced this week in a news release it received a $720,000 gift from the foundation this summer. Hilary Rowe, Central College director of marketing and communications, said in an email $50,000 has gone to the Journey Scholarship Fund, with the rest funding renovations to the building sharing the foundation’s namesake — the Maytag Student Center.
Rowe said in her email the foundation has supported Central for nearly a century, funding a full tuition scholarship and other financial aid, STEM initiatives and and other capital projects.
“Central has a very special relationship with the Maytag family,” Central College President Mark Putnam said in the release. “They still feel a strong sense of connection to Iowa and Central. Ken and Fritz Maytag have been committed to this building. Their values align closely with ours — with what Central wants to achieve in the world and who we are in the world.”
Much of the renovation work funded by the donation has already been completed, Rowe said in her email, with new amenities now available for students. The Maytag Student Center now houses the Maytag Marketplace, which includes a redesigned food and convenience store, the university’s Spirit Shoppe, temporary vendor spaces and areas for “public engagement.”
Putnam said in the release new technology will be added to certain rooms in the student center in the future through the donation, and lounge spaces will receive new finishes, seating and carpeting.
Iwan Williams, Central College executive director of retail management, said in the release the university used a student survey to learn what they would buy from a campus store if one was available, and from those responses, a “convenience store model” was developed. Now students can buy hot food, various beverages and more from the space in addition to grab-and-go food.
The marketplace’s new “pop-up vendor window” brings in local businesses to sell wares on campus, Williams said in the release, and has already seen success from Top Shelf Nutrition, which recently utilized the space.
As the marketplace is open to the public, Williams said in the release he expects groups like summer camps held on campus, as well as members of the community, to benefit from it. The space also fits into the college’s “Imagine More: It’s Central to Pella” initiative, which seeks to bring campus and community closer together through strategic partnerships and projects, both off and on campus.
“We’re drawing in local and specialty businesses that appeal to students and employees,” Williams said in the release. “It’s a manifestation of the Imagine More concept created here in the Maytag Marketplace. What we see right now is just the beginning.”
