Delta surges as it reinstates a full-year outlook and says demand is stabilizing

Delta Air LinesDAL $57.81 (0.27%) began 2025 saying that it had the potential to be its best fiscal year in a century. That dream fizzled out within three months amid ā€œuncertainty around global trade.ā€

The airline reported its second quarter earnings on Thursday morning, and things appear to have stabilized — though ā€œbest everā€ is probably still off the table.

Delta reinstated its full-year earnings outlook, forecasting $5.25 to $6.25 a share. That’s down from the beginning of the year, when it guided for more than $7.35 per share.

Still, investors cheered the return to having some idea about how the year will go. Delta shares surged more than 11% in premarket trading.

The airline (America’s largest) posted operating revenue of $15.51 billion, up 1% from the same period last year and above analyst estimates of $15.46 billion. Delta’s earnings came in at $2.10 per share, better than expected earnings of $2.06 per share.

ā€œThrough the quarter, demand trends stabilized at levels that are flat to last year and we continued to see resilience in our diverse, high-margin revenue streams,ā€ said Delta president Glen Hauenstein.

Passenger revenue was relatively flat year-over-year at $13.87 billion. Premium tickets continued to grow, up 5% to $6.35 billion. Main cabin ticket sales fell 5%.

In Delta’s credit card business, where it makes substantially higher profit margins compared to its business of flying people around, points continued to pay. The carrier pulled in another $2 billion from American ExpressAXP $318.00 (0.15%) on the quarter, up 10% from the same period last year. Last year, Delta made $7.4 billion in credit card revenue. see stock

šŸ„ Stewart Memorial Hospital and Clinics has named Ann Riat, PT, MSPT, as its 2025 third-quarter Exceptional Experience Award winner for her outstanding dedication to patient care. She was nominated by a colleague, Ashley Mork, after Riat volunteered to treat a patient with mastitis in response to an urgent request from a Storm Lake clinic. Although the rehab team had never treated the condition before, Riat quickly researched the appropriate therapeutic ultrasound settings and arranged to see the patient on her own time that Saturday, just ahead of a holiday weekend. Thanks to Riat’s initiative, the patient, who had been in pain for more than two weeks, received prompt relief and compassionate care. Her actions not only improved one patient’s experience but also helped set a precedent for treating similar cases in the future. Hospital leaders say Riat’s compassion and commitment reflect the mission of Stewart Memorial and embody the values behind the Exceptional Experience Award.

šŸ—ļø Endow Glidden is completing another project at the city’s park to continue promote the vitality and the utilization of the amenity. It was back in April when Endow Glidden stepped forward to finance and construct a new four-season shelter house. City Administrator, Brooke Peterson, says while the concrete for the structure was being poured, the idea of a pickleball court came to light. Peterson says workers were forming up for the new courts last week, with concrete expected to be poured here soon. The City of Glidden is partnering up with Endow Glidden to help cover costs of the construction. Peterson says a pickleball court will be a great new attraction for residents and visitors of Glidden to enjoy and looks forward to seeing the project come to life.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This article was first published in 2018, for the 25th anniversary of flooding.

More than 30 years ago, floods swept across Iowa from the Mississippi River to the Missouri River, destroying homes, businesses and lives. Here are some of the key events and images from the great flood of 1993.

Early signs of trouble: Heavy snow leads to flooding concerns in 1993

Concern about potential flooding began in early February 1993 after storms dumped almost 2 feet of snow in some parts of northern Iowa. Ice jams on the Raccoon River brought the year's first floods in West Des Moines on March 5.

Record flooding was widespread along the Cedar, Des Moines and Iowa rivers as early as March 31. The high water also wreaked havoc along the Mississippi River. By early May, locks closed and millions of dollars worth of cargo was backed up on barges up and down the river. The locks would close for the second time June 25, and they wouldn't reopen for months. The U.S. Coast Guard would order all pleasure boats off the river July 2. On July 4, the river would crest at 7 feet above flood stage ā€” its second-highest level in 155 years.

The Coralville Lake reservoir on the Iowa River would overtop its spillway on July 2 for the first time in its 35-year history. But the most serious flooding came the following week. Here's how it unfolded. full story
