Get Out Of The Heat This Weekend To Support Animal Rescue Of Carroll At Westgate Mall

The Westgate Mall in Carroll will have some furry visitors this weekend as the Carroll Chamber of Commerce and local businesses host Cause 4 Paws, a fundraiser to support the Animal Rescue of Carroll. Chamber Business Development Director Roseanne Nees says nearly a dozen businesses have partnered for the event, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 21. Nees says the Animal Rescue of Carroll will also have several adoptable cats and dogs at the mall who are looking for their forever homes. This is the second time the Westgate Mall has hosted Cause 4 Paws. It was the brainchild of Touch of Country owner Dee Svensson, who organized the first event this winter with True Value and Jeannineās Hallmark. The National Weather Service forecasts heat indices to reach over 100o F this weekend, and Nees and Svensson say Cause 4 Paws will be a great way to get out of the house this weekend without having to brave the scorching temperatures. Again, Cause 4 Paws is slated for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Westgate Mall in Carroll this coming Saturday. see story

šļø Due to the dangerously high temperatures forecasted for this week, the Breda American Legion Riders have decided to postpone their annual District 8 Legacy Run. The more than 110-mile ride was initially planned to take off from the Breda American Legion on the morning of Saturday, June 21, but has been rescheduled to Saturday, June 28. Only the date has changed for the ride, which includes stops at Mikeās Bar and Grill in Schleswig, Tinyās Bar in Mapleton, Buffalo Joeās Roadhouse in Smithland, and the Country Pumpkin in Boyer, with an endpoint back at the Breda American Legion. Legion Rider Gary Schmitz says the local ride is tied to the American Legionās National Legacy Run, slated for later this year. Registration for the District 8 Legacy Run opens at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, with a cost of $20 per rider and $10 per passenger, which increases to $20 if they want to join in the rideās poker game. The ride begins at 10 a.m. Schmitz says their event also features door prizes for participants to win. Schmitz adds the Legacy Run isnāt exclusive to motorcycles. Almost anything with wheels, within reason, can join in the fun. Money raised by the American Legionās National Legacy Run and the local district events previously supported the Legacy Scholarship for children of veterans killed or wounded in service to the nation. Schmitz says that the fund is now self-sustaining, so proceeds shifted to fund American Legion programs and service officers, who assist veterans and their families navigate the complexities of the VA and veteran benefits. Again, the 2025 District 8 American Legion Run begins Saturday, June 28, in Breda at 10 a.m., with registration opening at 9 a.m. Additional information is included with this story on our website.

šļø Substantial changes are underway in Dedham this year, including infrastructure, recreation, and housing, thanks to some assistance from the Region XII Council of Governments. Local Assistance Director Chris Whitaker says the most significant piece is a substantial overhaul of the cityās water distribution system. Whitaker adds city leadersā focus goes beyond what is underground. He says theyāve also been pursuing āquality of placeā improvements in recent years, from their public parks to their ballfield. Like many rural Iowa towns, workforce housing has been high on Dedhamās priority list, and Whitaker says two new homes will be available in town by the end of the year thanks to a partnership between the city and Region XII. Region XII offers a range of services, including grant writing and regional planning, to municipal governments in Sac, Crawford, Carroll, Greene, Audubon, and Guthrie Counties, as well as Dallas Center, De Soto, Perry, Redfield, and Woodward in Dallas County.

Union, brewery partner on beer to help injured and sick Ankeny firefighters
Phillip Sitter Des Moines Register

(The Des Moines Register)
Key Points AI-assisted summary
The Ankeny firefighters union partnered with Firetrucker Brewery to create Union Kolsch Ale to support a fund for injured or ill firefighters and their families.
A portion of the ale's can and keg sales goes to the Adam Nelsen Welfare Fund, named after a late Ankeny firefighter and paramedic.
The beer is expected to be available in Ankeny and beyond in various stores and restaurants, as well as on tap at Firetrucker.
The Ankeny firefightersā unionās collaborative fundraising effort with a local brewery to protect the health of their own and ultimately serve the wider community will soon be on store shelves and on tap across Iowa.
The Ankeny Professional Firefighters Local 4814 union has partnered with Firetrucker Brewery in Ankeny to create Union Kolsch Ale, sales of which union president Nick DeVries said will help Ankeny firefighters take care of expenses not covered by insurance when they or their family members are injured or fall ill. But DeVries said the ultimate goal is to find ways to give back to the community that supports them.
Ideally, there wonāt be sick or injured firefighters or family to take care of, DeVries said. But firefighters face higher risks of cancer diagnoses and deaths than the general public. And that can mean travel and lodging expenses, gas cards and groceries that need to be paid for.

(Lily Smith/The Register)
But given āweāve got a great community we serve on a daily basis,ā DeVries said he also would like to explore finding a local charity to support through the welfare fund.
The unionās Adam Nelsen Welfare Fund ā named after an Ankeny firefighter and paramedic who died in 2018 ā receives 5% of can and keg sales of Union Kolsch Ale, which the union and Firetrucker launched in May with an event at the brewery, located inside an old Ankeny Fire Department station at 713 S.W.
