Soup's On The Menu Friday In Carroll For Lions Club 2025 Fundraiser In Graham Park

The Carroll Lions Club is back in Graham Park tomorrow (Friday) for its annual soup day fundraiser. Club President Sondra Rierson says she and the Lions Club’s members will be doling out soup on Friday, Oct. 17, in the Graham Park Shelter House. The tally of eaters typically climbs into the hundreds by the time they stop serving at 7 p.m. The menu includes all-you-can-eat chili, cheesy potato, and chicken noodle soup. Each meal includes a ham sandwich, a drink, and dessert. Meals for adults are $13, and kids 10 and under eat for $8. Many in the community have made the Lions Club Soup Day a part of their fall traditions, and Rierson thanks each person who makes a point to stop by every year. The money raised during the soup day fundraiser stays right here in Carroll and supports a variety of local initiatives. Recent examples include scholarships for students at Carroll and Kuemper Catholic, new playground equipment for local parks, and financial assistance for eyeglasses and hearing aids, among others. Rierson says those efforts rely on their volunteer membership, and they are always looking for new people to add to their roster. Stop by and support the Carroll Lions Club 2025 Soup Day Fundraiser, running from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Graham Park Shelter house tomorrow (Friday).

🥛 Over 30 teams competed in Wednesday’s Pack the Pantry event sponsored by C3 (Christ, Community, Celebration) of Manning, The Manning Rotary and IKM-Manning National Honor Society. Each team consisted of three members, who were given five minutes to shop at Fareway in Carroll, getting as close as they could to $250 worth of groceries and other items without going over to be declared the winner. Jeremy and Gina Carroll Family were just shy of the goal by 39 cents, with AGP coming in second at 43 cents short and Bryce Irlbeck Family third falling just $1.27 below the limit. All teams, regardless of winning, then purchased items in their carts to be donated to the Manning Food Pantry which helps families in need at the IKM-Manning School District. A trailer full containing $11,282.70 worth of groceries will now be available on the shelves. Organizers wish to thank each team who stepped up to participate, sponsors who donated, and Fareway staff who continue to support the annual fundraising fun and success year after year.
🗳 The South-Central Calhoun (SCC) Community School District is asking voters to approve of an extension of the current voter-approved physical plant and equipment levy (VPPEL) this upcoming November election. Voters elected yes for SCC to levy the maximum $1.34 to taxpayers in 2018, which was used to finance building improvements throughout the district. Superintendent Brad Anderson says that was set to expire in 2026, and the SCC school board and administration are asking constituents to consider continuing that levy for another ten years, which he believes in the most fiscally responsible move the district could do at this point in time. Anderson says many projects are currently being planned that would utilize the money generated from the VPPEL. The current SCC tax rate for Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 is $11.326 per $1,000, still below the state average of $13.15. Anderson wants constituents to know this isn’t a new tax, just an extension on the current PPEL rate. Anderson says the district will start pushing more information out themselves starting next week. He encourages voters to learn all the facts and to vote knowing that the school board, himself and all the staff at SCC are just wanting the best environment for their students. Anderson encourages all who have questions to contact him by email [email protected], or calling the office 712-464-7210.
🚨 Sac County Attorney Ben Smith announces commitment from Calhoun County Sheriff to house inmates at new proposed Sac County Jail if bond is passed this upcoming election. Smith says this commitment with Calhoun County Sheriff Pat Riley will assist in offsetting the bond costs by bringing in approximately $122,000 annually for Sac County, based on the $65 per inmate a day rate and the historical data averaging Calhoun County holds around 1,875 inmates each year. The $12.5 million general obligation (GO) bond on the new facility for Sac County would have a 20-year payback period, with Calhoun County contributing $2.4 million across that span towards the repayment for housing inmates. After the bond is paid off, Riley says the sheriff’s department would still utilize Sac County Jail for detainees, creating a steady, locally controlled revenue for Sac County. Since the 1980’s Calhoun County has not operated its own jail, which will be what Sac County would have to look into next, as the oldest jail in the State of Iowa no longer meets requirements for modern safety, security and operational standards, which is projected to cost Sac County taxpayers over $13.5 million if inmates would need to be housed in other counties. Smith says Sac County Sheriff Katie Stange and I work closely together, as do I with Calhoun County Sheriff Pat Riley, ensuring smooth coordination on public safety issues across our jurisdictions. This partnership is a true win-win for Sac County, providing a stable revenue stream to lessen the bond’s financial burden, and for Calhoun County, where closer housing in Sac City (instead of their current out-of-county jail) will decrease transportation mileage, fuel expenses, and transfer times—allowing deputies to focus more on proactive policing and community safety. This cooperation offers a rare economic opportunity specific to Sac County, delivering a built-in revenue partnership not available to other new jail projects across the state.” A supermajority, or 60 percent of votes need to approve of the Go bond in order for a new facility to be built. A $11 million bond measure narrowly failed last November with 58.8% approval.
