Better safe than sorry?... The Fed boldly kicked off its easing cycle, serving up a 50-basis-point rate cut. But Chair Jerome Powell cautioned against expecting more jumbo slashes. At the central bank’s remaining meetings this year, monetary policymakers expect to cut 50 more basis points combined if the economy unfolds as anticipated. So why’d the Fed go big this week?

📚️ Eighteen Buena Vista University (BVU) Students, three from the listening area, have been selected to receive the Clifford A. Rae Academic Achievement Award for the 2024 year. This achievement award is part of a competitive program that gives business and science students who excel in their academic studies up to $10,000 in scholarship funding in their second, third, or fourth year of school. The money is then used to help offset costs associated with completing an internship or experiential learning initiative. Riley Parkis from Carroll, who is studying for an exercise science major, and Alexander Galati from Manning, who is pursuing computer science, are second-year winners. From Ida Grove, Lillian Hoffman is a fourth-year winner working towards a biology major. The Clifford A. Rae Award was created 13 years ago by two separate endowments of $750,000 from the Siebens Foundation, named after the longtime advisor and council to the foundation, Clifford A. Rae. Students may receive the award more than once during their time at BVU to provide learning opportunities they would otherwise not be able to experience.
🏞️ The Parks and Rec Department for the City of Audubon has completed the addition of new amenities to three parks throughout the community. Officials wish to extend a special thanks to the 100+ Women Who Care for help funding the new zip line installed this week at the Blue Grass Park, also known as the Dinosaur Park. Other projects included installing water drinking fountains with a bottle refill station at Blue Grass Park, Legion Park, and City Square, allowing residents to enjoy the park while staying hydrated. The water fountains at the City Square are a bit different, with a unique feature of a dog bowl for community members to give their pets a drink while walking. City officials want to thank Sonntag Plumbing, Meaike Construction, and the many individuals who assisted in installing the water fountains in the parks. The Parks and Rec Department is continuing with plans for future projects, as the city council just approved them to enter the city into a contest through Bobcat to potentially win $100,000 for park improvement projects. Voting for the contest opens Oct. 3, so city officials ask community members to look for the link when it becomes available.

✂️ A world-renowned Lake City business, Dobson Pipe Organ Builders, celebrated the grand opening of its new facility (Tuesday) following a devastating fire three years ago. Community leaders and residents gathered in downtown Lake City for the company’s ribbon cutting. Dobson owner John Panning announced in 2022 that they were committed to rebuilding on the same site as their former headquarters, which was completely destroyed by a June 15, 2021 fire. In a crowded city council chamber, the ordinances both passed 5-2 with councilmembers Mike Simonson and Josh Mandelbaum voting against them. Immediately after the votes were tallied, crowds outside in the hallway booed and chanted “shame.” continue reading
