Hey Snackers,

Folks have spent 2.4B hours reading articles in English on Wikipedia this year. The top article visited: “Deaths in 2024.” Looks like morbid curiosity overpowered interest in the presidential election.

Bitcoin crossed $100K for the first time yesterday evening. Earlier, the major US stock indexes closed at record highs yesterday after upbeat comments on the economy from Fed Chair Powell. Investors have eyes on tomorrow’s November job openings.

Support Animal Rescue Of Carroll Saturday With Paws For The Cause

The Animal Rescue of Carroll (ARC) is bringing critters into the holiday festivities with “Paws for the Cause” this weekend in downtown Carroll. From 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, volunteers and shelter animals will be stationed near the Westgate Mall, raising funds and searching for some of the animals’ forever homes. ARC Director Jessica Briggs says supporters are asked to bring animal toys or food to be entered into a raffle drawing. Tickets are also available for $3 each. Pets are also welcome to join Paws for the Cause, and Briggs says they’ll have photo opportunities with a well-known holiday character. Briggs adds Saturday is a perfect opportunity for households searching for their newest members to meet various animals. Briggs says adopting is always more cost-effective than acquiring furry friends from a breeder, but this month, the associated fees are even lower. Again, Paws for the Cause is on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Westgate Mall in downtown Carroll.

🚒 A Scranton house was deemed a complete loss after electrical issues caused multiple fires throughout Wednesday afternoon and early Thursday morning. The Scranton Fire Department was dispatched around 1:00 p.m. Wednesday for a house on the south end of town with flames due to electrical problems inside a wall. Crews put out the fire and returned back to the station before being called out again around 3:00 p.m. for a report of smoke. The department was there through the remainder of the afternoon, ensuring no other signs of a flame or smoke were present. At approximately 4:00 a.m. Thursday morning, crews were dispatched to the same residence again, with the house fully engulfed in flames. No one was injured, but the house is a complete loss. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office, Greene County Ambulance, Alliant Energy, and Black Hills Gas all assisted the Scranton Fire Department on the scene. 🏫 Multiple organizations throughout Sac City and Sac County are partnering for a new project to address a housing need to support the growing industries in the area. Sac County Economic and Tourism Development, Sac County Development, the City of Sac City, and East Sac County Community School District began exploring options for turning vacant buildings and lots into various housing units to meet the demand of housing needs. Executive Director for Sac Economic and Tourism Development, Brandy Wilson, says based on a 2020 Housing Needs Assessment, the county was recommended to obtain 816 units, with 180 to be rentals to fill the approximately 700 jobs that remain unfilled, and that was if no change or growth was reported. She says the Sac City College Addition Urban Renewal Area will be helping to achieve the recommendation from the assessment. FULL STORY

‘Tis the season for overspending. Here's how to save your green while holiday shopping

Iowa Public Radio | By Sheila Brummer

The Grinch was one of the highlights of this year's Holiday Lighted Parade in Sioux City.

The National Retail Federation expects spending to grow this holiday season. Although inflation is down from a year ago, the impact on prices forces some Iowans to modify traditions.

“Look at the lights — what do you think, Bubba?”

Kaylee Koontz and her 15-month-old son, Everett, enjoyed the sights and sounds of Sioux City’s Holiday Lighted Parade on the Monday before Thanksgiving.

“It’s pretty spectacular," Koontz said. "I know my favorite last year was the Grinch."

Koontz won’t be a Grinch this year. She and her husband plan to spend $600 on gifts, food and transportation for family and friends this holiday season. The national average is a record $902 per person, according to the National Retail Federation.

“I have a stepdaughter too, and so we will probably spend at least $100 on the kids," Koontz said. "But my husband and I usually cut back a little bit during Christmas and spend it on each other the rest of the year."
