Carroll Fire Department Will Soon Be Selling Tickets To The 2024 Firemen's Dance

In less than two weeks, members of the Carroll Fire Department will begin knocking on doors throughout town, selling tickets for the 102nd annual Carroll Firemen’s Dance. Fire Chief Dan Hannasch says the first day of door-to-door sales is the first Monday in October. Firefighter Jeremy Heinrichs says this is the department’s major fundraiser of the year, and the money collected from ticket sales and donations goes directly into the department's equipment and programs. The 2024 Firemen’s Dance will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Carrollton Center, with live music from Third Wish. Those unable to attend the dance can still support the Carroll Fire Department using Venmo @Carroll-FireDept or by sending a check to the fire station at 801 Bella Vista Dr. in Carroll.

🏥 Audubon County Memorial Hospital and Clinics is excited to offer two new technologies of advanced scientific detection and treatment for breast cancer patients. Earlier this month, ACMH started using the Magseed® marker technology, the first facility in the area to utilize the minimally invasive metallic seed to mark cancerous tumors in the patient’s body. The seed, the size of a grain of rice, is placed at the cancer site, emitting a magnetic signal that is traced by a Sentimag® probe, in a similar way to how a metal detector works, to assist surgeons in removing the cancer and get the patient scheduled with additional treatment sooner, if need be. ACMH also offers access to the world’s first non-radioactive, dual-tracer breast cancer staging technology, using an iron oxide-based magnetic solution, migrating along the path of the invasive cancer cells and emitting a magnetic signal assisting surgeons to detect and remove the necessary lymph nodes. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Marie or for more information on this new technology, contact ACMH’s Outpatient Specialty Clinic at 712-563-5304.

🤙 The new full-time director for Main Street Manning, Andrea Rohe, announces that they are merging Main Street Manning and the Manning Chamber of Commerce into one entity. Not only will the two organizations share a physical building space, but Rohe will serve as the director of both, making her the centralized contact person for individuals’ and businesses’ questions and needs. The merger will also increase the number of volunteers able to work for the collaboration and fundraising events of the joint organization, by eliminating duplications of community efforts. Manning is not the first city to pursue this option, as Jefferson also combined organizations previously for much of the same reason as Manning. By putting this in perspective, in 2023, Main Street Manning alone helped start six new businesses in the district, obtained over $500,000 in grant funding for the city with housing and façade projects, and had 50 active volunteers with a recorded 1,789 hours of service. For contact information.

🥳 With construction completed, the Lake City Pickleball Committee launched the opening of the new pickleball courts this (Thursday) morning. Over the past two years, the committee fundraised to reach the $104,000 goal needed to construct the two courts in Goins Park. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in May of this year, with the anticipated completion date in August. Due to the posts for the nets getting set by sawing the holes into the poured concrete, setting the post, and pouring new concrete in to hold them, an additional 30 days needed to pass before the surfacing was applied. Anyone is now welcome to play the fastest-growing sport in America in Lake City at its pickleball complex. A bag containing four pickleball paddles and balls will be located at the courts, but otherwise, players are encouraged to use their gear. The Lake City Pickleball Committee wishes to thank the city council, local businesses, and community members for their support in making this project a reality.

💸 Businesses and building owners in Lake City still have time to submit a proposal to the city council for a Catalyst grant through the Iowa Economic Development Authority. A $100,000 grant opportunity will be granted to fund one building in the community with façade projects and other various updates and renovations. City Administrator Jacob Matthews says this grant is another initiative to remediate underutilized buildings. Matthews says Lake City has received the Catalyst grant in the past and knows firsthand how great an opportunity this is for community buildings. Building owners in the community who have specific projects in mind to maintain their structures' historic feel while providing much-needed maintenance and upkeep can submit their proposals to Matthews by the next council meeting. Any further questions on the IEDA Catalyst grant can be directed to Matthews by calling 712-640-6401.

It was the summer of pickleball in Iowa, and courts are popping up all over — even on farms

Dave Flexsenhar plays pickleball with his wife, Mary Beth, and their friends in their renovated hay loft.

The plastic pop of a pickleball was a familiar sound this summer. Players across the state paddled the hollow, perforated balls in parks, recreation centers and even sports bars fitted with their own set of courts. They laughed, shouted and careened across tennis courts freshly painted with additional pickleball lines, their arms outstretched to make match point across the lowered nets. They joined leagues, took classes and made friends to the satisfying crack of the ball connecting with their paddles, available in countless different colors and designs.

Over the past few years, pickleball has exploded across the country, and it’s maintained its reign as the fastest-growing sport in America. While the game — an addictive and fast-paced cross between tennis, badminton and table tennis — is not new (it was invented in the ‘60s), its sudden surge in popularity has led to courts popping up across Iowa to meet the demand of the players, young and old, who have flocked to parks and recreation centers to get their fix. See where new pickleball courts have opened 2022 - 2024
