Wall Street is betting against the US consumer as tariffs escalate

Consumer discretionary is the worst-performing S&P 500 sector ETF in a no-good day for stocks.

Middle aged man hugging US dollars with a frightrened facial expression

As the S&P 500 approaches a correction, consumer discretionary is the worst-performing sector ETF in the index, a sign investors think you'll have less disposable income to buy new gadgets or go on vacation.

Markets continued to slide on Thursday as investors are overcome with uncertainty over President Trump's threats to impose tariffs, which in almost all cases have been met with counter-threats. Tariffs raise costs for businesses, which usually attempt to pass that cost to consumers in the form of higher prices, and lately consumers have been feeling gloomier. The alternative? Higher input costs and an inability to raise prices too much in the face of cash-strapped consumers is a recipe for margins to be squeezed.

Restaurant stocks are taking a big hit with Chili's owner Brinker InternationalEAT $132.91 (-8.72%), slop-bowl seller CavaCAVA $74.38 (-9.71%)and NYC burger staple Shake ShackSHAK $82.87 (-4.94%)each down more than 5%, as are many of their peers. Several fast food stocks, like McDonald’sMCD $298.02 (-0.46%)and Wendy’sWEN $15.31 (0.36%), are notably flat.

Live NationLYV $115.02 (-6.43%), the dominant concert ticket dealer in the US, is down more than 7%. (I would compare it to its peers but it doesn't really have any.)

Travel stocks are also sinking despite having a stellar final quarter of 2024.United AirlinesUAL $69.94 (-3.48%), DeltaDAL $43.88 (-3.13%) and American AirlinesAAL $10.70 (-2.15%) are each down. SouthwestLUV $31.08 (3.24%) is notably still rallying as Wall Street celebrated its introduction of bag fees, as well as fresh guidance saying its first-quarter fuel costs will be lower. Cruise lines like NorwegianNCLH $18.42 (-3.10%) and CarnivalCUK $17.30 (-2.53%) continued sailing down. Travel platforms like AirbnbABNB $119.55 (-5.53%) and ExpediaEXPE $157.18 (-3.29%) also slid.

🔥 The Manning and Templeton Fire Departments were called out to a car completely engulfed in flames along Hwy 141 yesterday (Wednesday) evening. The call came in around 5:45 p.m. to a vehicle fire just east of Manning. No injuries were reported as all occupants were able to get out of the car, but the vehicle and all possessions inside were deemed a total loss. Manning Fire Chief John Lorenzen says crews were on the scene for approximately half an hour, putting out the fire, believed to be caused by a mechanical issue. The owner of the vehicle, Cheyenne Marie Babcock, has organized a GoFundMe to assist in replacing the family car, her children’s car seats, and other items. A link for those wishing to donate has been included here.

🥾 The City of Coon Rapids announced today (Thursday) that the Riverside Trail will be closed for several months beginning next week as a resurfacing project gets underway. The trail will be unavailable starting March 17 and will be closed into May while crews work to complete tree trimming, pavement milling, and adding a new layer of asphalt. The 2.5-plus-mile trail connects the Riverside Campground to the trailhead on Velvet Avenue north of town and also runs along Coon Rapids’s eastern edge. Initially, they had planned to replace the aging asphalt with concrete but switched to asphalt resurfacing due to cost constraints. The $410,000 project is funded through contributions from the City of Coon Rapids, Community Foundation of Carroll County, Carroll County Conservation, and private fundraising. The trail is expected to reopen for Memorial Day weekend, dependent on the weather during construction.

🔥 Audubon and Guthrie County are currently placed on an active burn ban until further notice. Even with the latest snowstorm bringing in significant snow that is melting, conditions are still drier than normal, increasing the chance of any fire quickly going out of control. Open burning of any kind is prohibited, and those caught violating these orders will be charged with a simple misdemeanor, a penalty that can face up to 30 days in jail and $800 in fines. Those with further questions are asked to contact their local fire department chief. Seven other counties are currently in a burn ban, including Adair, Mills, Montgomery Page, and Decatur Counties.

Cooperative housing for older adults coming to Ingersoll

A new 55+ cooperative housing development is planned alongside 31st Street and Ingersoll Avenue — bringing a shareholder-housing model that's different from traditional condos and rentals.

Driving the news: The Artessa will include 52 multi-family units and six townhomes on a parcel next to Chase Bank.

  • Minneapolis-based Lifestyle Communities is developing the project as an option for older adults who want to downsize without homeownership responsibilities.

How it works: Instead of purchasing a unit outright, residents buy a share in the cooperative, which grants occupancy rights, Dena Meyer, president of Lifestyle Communities, tells Axios.

  • Residents collectively own the building and elect a board to make decisions about the community, such as future tenants, landscaping and how the building is run.

  • Maintenance is handled by property management.

  • "It really is a true sense of community," Meyer says. "A lot of like-minded individuals living in one neighborhood under one roof."

Details: Residences range from 1,172 to 1,868 square feet, and share prices start at about $263,000. A monthly membership fee starting around $2,500 is also added based on unit size, but Meyer says it includes major cost of living expenses like property taxes, insurance, TV and internet, maintenance, water and sewer costs.

  • Amenities include a rooftop deck, fitness studio, creative workspace, lending library, heated underground parking, EV charging stations and a pet wash area.

What's next: Construction will begin once 50% of the units are pre-sold.

  • Meyer expects that to happen later this year, with a 14-month construction timeline.
