😁 Happy Friday! At this point in summer, getting into your car feels less like running errands and more like stepping into a convection oven. You know it’s bad when you start driving with just your fingertips because the steering wheel is one thousand degrees—and don’t even get us started on leather seats.
We’re deep in the season where your seatbelt might brand you and your iced coffee melts before you leave the drive-thru. So here’s your friendly reminder to crack the windows, bring a towel for the seat, and stop pretending you don’t need sunscreen just because you’re “only driving.”

Pepsi pops on Q2 earnings beat fueled by cost cuts and snacky revamps

Pepsi also forecast a smaller earnings dip this year as it focuses on more affordable pricing to keep shoppers loyal.

PepsiCoPEP $144.93 (7.08%) shares soared over 6% Thursday morning after the snacks and beverage giant topped Q2 earnings expectations even as overall name brand demand cools.

Adjusted earnings hit $2.12 per share, topping estimates of $2.03 by analysts polled on FactSet. Revenue came in at $22.73 billion, slightly ahead of forecasts even as overall food and beverage volumes continue to shrink in North America.

Pepsi Zero Sugar was a bright spot during the quarter, raking in double-digit volume growth. Pepsi is working on creating more value for customers with better price entry points and a revamp of its core snacks brands like Lay’s and Tostitos. It’s also staying the course on improving product visibility in-store and cutting costs. Pepsi shut down two of its food manufacturing plants during the latest quarter.

Looking ahead, Pepsi reaffirmed its full-year outlook of low single-digit organic revenue growth and now expects core EPS to decline 1.5% this year, a much smaller drop than the 3% it previously projected, thanks to changes in currency markets.

Despite today’s rally, Pepsi shares are still down about 4.5% year to date. see stock

💸 The Cities of Arcadia and Vail are the most recent recipients of the Aureon Charity Grant Program, offered locally through Western Iowa Networks (WIN). The grant is eligible for non-profit agencies applying for funding for projects in communities served by an Aureon participating telecommunications company. Each city was presented with a check today (Wednesday) for $500 to offset the costs of the plan to add additional amenities and improve the quality of life for residents. The City of Vail is currently working to update its parks, replacing outdated metal play structures with more modern, inclusive equipment. This effort includes ADA-compliant surfacing and incorporates sensory-related activities to better serve individuals with disabilities. The City of Arcadia is continuing with its proposed bike path, extending it further south on S. Division Street to the housing development located on Cleve Boulevard. Once the additional path is complete, residents of Arcadia will be able to safely walk or bike alongside the road to reach the ball fields, the park, or Saint John’s Catholic Cemetery. Officials from both cities extend their gratitude to Aureon and WIN for the continued support received through this Charity Grant program. Learn more about the program or apply for funding.

🏥 Stewart Memorial Hospital and Clinics has announced that Amanda Buse, DNP, ARNP, will join the Lake View Clinic team this fall, bringing a strong background in rural health care and a patient-first philosophy to the community. Buse, a Wall Lake native and graduate of the first East Sac County (ESC) High School class, brings more than eight years of experience in health care, including five years of operating her own private clinic in Wall Lake. Her specialties include family medicine, women’s health, hormones, disease prevention, immunology, and rheumatology. Buse says, “I always enjoyed working with Stewart Memorial. They are professional, respectful, patient-centered, and innovative. I’ve always appreciated their commitment to rural health care, and I’m excited to now officially be part of their team in Lake View.” To accommodate her growing practice, Stewart Memorial is renovating the Lake View clinic’s lower level to improve patient comfort and expand services. Buse will begin seeing patients soon after the improvements at the clinic are completed in the autumn.

🚨 The Sac County Board of Supervisors is looking to appoint a candidate for the vacancy of the Sac County Sheriff’s position at the next supervisor’s meeting. The vacancy was created after current Sac County Sheriff Ken McClure announced that he would retire, with an effective end date of June 26, after almost four decades in his law enforcement career. To fill the position, the supervisors had to choose one of two options: to hold a special election or to appoint someone to fill the open position until the term would end at the next general election in November 2026. The board reviewed the choices during its July 1 meeting and concluded that a special election would cost the county approximately $25,000 on the low end and would also require a significant amount of work for the county auditor’s office to have that individual only serve until November of next year. According to Iowa code, when deciding to appoint, supervisors are required to post a notice of intent in the newspaper, allowing residents of Sac County to understand the plan and provide input to officials. That notice must be published at least ten days before the board’s scheduled date of when the appointment will occur. With the notice in the paper, the Sac County Board of Supervisors is expected to appoint a candidate from the internal applications received on July 22. If no petition from the public is presented requesting a special election within 14 days of the appointment, then the appointee will occupy the county sheriff position until the next general election in 2026.

Simpson College to purchase medical simulation technology with grant funds

Simpson College in Indianola will use grant funding from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust to provide new equipment and resources to students studying health sciences and more.

The private university announced in a news release it received a $135,000 grant from the philanthropic organization to purchase a virtual dissection table and 14 touchscreen tablets to add to the college’s existing educational resources like its cadaver lab and 3D modeling tools.

“This award will provide excellent experiential learning opportunities for students in the natural sciences at Simpson,” said CoryAnne Harrigan, interim academic dean and vice president for academic affairs, in the release. “It will deepen their understanding of the complexities of human physiology and give them a taste of what health professionals see on the job.”

The Anatomage table is a medical education tool that displays life-size, digitized bodies for study and interaction, allowing students to practice procedures and complete other training without the need for a physical cadaver, according to the product website.

More than 600 students will be able to benefit from the new technology, the release stated, from those studying biology to neuroscience to psychology and more, as well as those on pre-medicine, pre-physical therapy and other health care tracks.

Assistant professor of biology Lauren Points said in the release the new equipment represents a “huge step in advancing our student-centered approach to teaching” by introducing them to new technology and allowing them to use the tablets wherever they need on campus. The new tools will also better prepare students for the current health care field and its technologies.

“We are deeply grateful to the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust for their investment in our students and mission,” said acting president Terry Handley in the release. “This grant will allow us to continue preparing future healthcare leaders through dynamic, hands-on learning experiences.” see story
