👀 Into the Solar System

😁 Happy Friday! Iowa weather can be so…. unpredictable. One minute, it’s sunny and warm, and the next, we’re bundled up like we’re preparing for an Arctic expedition. It’s like the weather’s got a split personality, and we’re just along for the ride. Honestly, it’s been giving us whiplash worse than a bad reality TV plot twist. But don’t be fooled by these temperature tantrums— Spring is only 20 days away!

Right after Nvidia’s earnings affirm AI boom, Deutsche Bank warns on historical busts

How this capex boom differs from previous historical episodes.
Luke Kawa

(Nvidia)

“We are currently in the midst of a once-in-a-generation private sector capex boom as AI mania sweeps the world,” Deutsche Bank analysts led by Jim Reid wrote on the heels of NvidiaNVDA $127.31 (-3.02%)’s fourth-quarter earnings report, which largely affirmed a positive near-term trajectory for this spending binge.

The bad news about booms, however, is that they tend to lead to busts.

The analysts examined past instances of sector-specific massive upswings, from the 1790s canal mania in England through China’s recent urbanization and land boom, to see what these episodes have in common and any distinguishing factors between them and the current AI investment campaign.

They found the typical features of a boom-bust cycle are:

  • Asset price inflation (check!)

  • Leverage and debt dynamics (no check!)

Carroll County Supervisors Reinvest Down Payment Assistance Funds Back Into Program

The Carroll County Board of Supervisors will reinvest clawed-back funds into the Region XII Regional Housing Authority to provide additional down payment assistance to qualifying homebuyers in the county. Housing Programs Coordinator Karla Janning says one of their previous recipients did not complete their required residency period, so over $11,000 is returning to the program. Janning says the supervisors have three options. They can offer the funds as down payment assistance as a forgivable loan, as they did previously, reallocate the money to the housing trust fund, or designate the funds to qualifying home rehabilitation projects via an advantaged loan. Janning notes they are routinely contacted by people interested in the down payment assistance program, and Supervisors Scott Johnson and Gene Meiners say that seems like the quickest and easiest option to see the funds used. Supervisors Mark McCrea, Stephanie Hausman, and Mike Andersen agreed with that, and the board voted unanimously to reinvest the funds into the down payment assistance program to add another application slot. To be eligible, the recipient must be a first-time homebuyer and meet income eligibility guidelines. Individuals are encouraged to reach out to Janning at Region XII by phone at 712-775-7825 or email at [email protected] to determine if they qualify.

Westergaard says he still plans to help out anyway he can with events and projects for the Lake View community. He wants to thank all of the city officials and staff that have worked with him over the last years for everything they have done, even though much goes unnoticed. For the time being, Mayor Pro Tempore, Ken Steinkamp, will serve in the role until further guidance is made on how city council would like to proceed to permanently fill the vacancy of both the mayor and city administrator.

How to see the planet parade in the night sky

On Feb. 28 all seven other planets in the solar system will be visible in North America.

This week, a rare astrological phenomenon is happening in our night sky. All seven other planets in our solar system will be visible from North America, in a display known as the planet parade.

Allison Jaynes, associate professor in the department of physics and astronomy at the University of Iowa, explained that most planets are close to the ecliptic plane.

“[It’s] sort of just like a flat sheet of paper that intersects through the middle of the sun and the Earth, and all the other planets are just kind of moving around the sun on that flat sheet of paper,” Jaynes explained on River to River. “So they're often in an alignment of some kind.”

What is special about this week is that the planets happen to be on the same side of the sun at the same time, so stargazers in Iowa will be able to see the planets simultaneously.

“It doesn't happen very often, and in fact, it won't happen again until 2040,” Jaynes said.

Most of these planets can be seen with the naked eye on a clear night, with the exception of Uranus and Neptune, the planets furthest away from the sun. However, they'll be visible with an at-home telescope or high-powered binoculars.

Telescope users will also be able to see the rings of Saturn and the moons of Jupiter.

When locating the planets in the sky, the red color of Mars makes it easy to identify. Jupiter and Saturn will look like bright white stars. Saturn will be low in the sky, so finding a place to view the parade without mountains or buildings obstructing the sky is key.

If you want an additional tool to understand what you’re looking at, Jaynes recommends using the app Stellarium. In the app, you can point your phone at the night sky and it will label what you're looking at.

Friday, Feb. 28 is the day the planets will be most closely clustered together, but it will be possible to see them a few days before and after Friday.

To hear this conversation, listen to River to River, hosted by Ben KiefferCaitlin Troutman produced this episode.
