Pella Corporation Donates $25,000 To Carroll Children’s Museum

The Carroll Children’s Museum received a generous donation from Pella Corporation to provide additional activities and amenities to the newest child attraction in the City of Carroll. Through the Pella Rolscreen Foundation, a $25,000 donation was provided to the museum to purchase a LiteZilla, a large box with light-up, moveable pegs where different designs could be made, encouraging motor skills and creativity. Newly promoted plant manager Danielle Leonard says the Pella Rolscreen Foundation wishes to support the communities in which the Pella team lives. AUDIO

Leonard says the Carroll Children’s Museum applied for the money specifically for the LiteZilla, and Pella donated an additional $15,000; the organization was able to purchase a more extensive version and have extra for more ideas to be added to the museum. AUDIO

The Pella Rolscreen Foundation reviews applicants of non-profits 501(c)(3), public non-profits, and governmental entities submitting requests for specific projects in mind with the funding. Grants range anywhere from $10,000 to $50,000. Carroll Children’s Museum staff thanked Pella Corp. for choosing them for the donation and encouraged everyone, children and adults, to check out the new activity that is now available.

PRESENTED BY ‘ABC’S OF CORN’
New Children's Book, "ABC’s of Corn," Educates and Entertains While Celebrating Family Heritage

Publication Date: June 3, 2024

Prepare to embark on an educational journey through the world of corn with "ABC’s of Corn," a delightful new children’s book penned by three sisters who share a deep-rooted connection to agriculture. Scheduled for release on June 3, 2024, "ABC’s of Corn" is a vibrant exploration of the multifaceted role corn plays in our lives, blending entertainment with essential learning for children aged 3 to 10.

Written by Norma Kennebeck, Jean Marie Thelen, and Lois Roets—three sisters hailing from a family farm in western Iowa—"ABC’s of Corn" captures the essence of corn's significance in our society. From its presence in our food to its role in fueling our vehicles, each page of this book celebrates a letter of the alphabet, accompanied by colorful illustrations and engaging sections such as "Corn Fact," "Internet Search," "Field Research," "Your Opinion," and "Fun Fact." ON SALE NOW

But "ABC’s of Corn" is more than just an educational tool; it's a testament to family heritage and collaboration. Initiated by Jean's son, Tony Thelen, the project blossomed into a collective effort involving over 25 relatives. From contributing original artwork to unearthing historical artifacts from the authors' father's hybrid seed corn business, the family's dedication infused every aspect of the book's creation.

One of the book's highlights is a bonus section chronicling the authors' family farm near Breda, Iowa, including a heartwarming anecdote about their father gifting premium seed corn to Boys Town founder Fr. Flanagan in 1944. Accompanied by a poignant photograph and the original letter to Boys Town, this narrative adds a touching layer of history to "ABC’s of Corn."

In keeping with the authors' spirit of generosity, 100% of the proceeds from "ABC’s of Corn" will be donated to 4-H, an organization close to the hearts of Norma, Jean, and Lois. By supporting 4-H (www.4-H.org), readers not only enrich their own lives but also contribute to empowering young minds across the nation.

"ABC’s of Corn" promises to captivate young readers with its blend of education and entertainment while honoring the legacy of three remarkable sisters. Don't miss the opportunity to embark on this enlightening journey through the world of corn.

STATE NEWS
Iowa’s twister tally is growing, approaching all-time record

by Matt Kelley | Jun 6, 2024

As the experts study the damage, satellite photos and other data, the number of tornadoes that have hit Iowa this year continues to rise.

The National Weather Service now says Iowa has had 94 tornadoes touch down in the state this year, in what’s still considered a preliminary count.

That includes 45 tornadoes during April, which broke the record for the month of 40, set in April of 2001.

We had 48 more tornadoes in May, and one confirmed so far in June.

The yearly total record for Iowa is 120 tornadoes, set in 2004.

There’s still roughly three weeks left in the three-month tornado season, though twisters can strike during any month.

Back in 2021, Iowa had a record of 63 tornadoes in a single day — in December.
