City/Chamber Staff Ready To Welcome Thousands Of Fans Monday For 1A/2A State Baseball At Merchants Park

Merchants Park — Carroll, Iowa
Merchants Park stands ready to welcome thousands of players, coaches, and fans to Carroll next week for the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Class 1A and 2A state baseball tournaments. This is the fourth year the 1A and 2A baseball seasons will end in Carroll, and Parks and Recreation Director Chad Tiemeyer, who plays a central role in the planning alongside Carroll Chamber of Commerce Program Director Ashley Schable, says it is now something they look forward to every year. AUDIO
They have around 60 volunteers scheduled to help out during the tournament. About 2/3rds of them are tasked with overseeing the admission gate, and the remainder help shuttle fans, clean up the park between games, or whatever else is needed. The local schools manage the concession stand. Tiemeyer says the feedback from IHSAA on Carroll as a host community is overwhelmingly positive. AUDIO

In the wake of pork plant closures, some producers take on extra costs
Iowa Public Radio | By Rachel Cramer
Published July 17, 2024 at 2:49 PM CDT

Larry Alliger stands in one of his finishing barns for hogs at his farm near Gowrie. Alliger also grows corn and soybeans.
Over the last two years, several large pork packers have closed plants in California, Minnesota and most recently Iowa. For some pork producers, this means additional miles and more money to deliver hogs on top of tough economic times.
On his farm near Gowrie, Larry Alliger walked toward a row of low-roofed hog barns. He buys piglets from Colorado with his son, and between both of their operations, he said they can have around 20,000 pigs on hand.
They sell them to Tyson Foods through marketing contracts.
Alliger checked on the hogs in one of the barns.
"We start loading these tomorrow, three o’clock. We have two loads in the morning that go to Storm Lake,” Alliger said.
Hauling hogs to the Tyson pork processing plant in Storm Lake is a big change for Alliger. For 35 years, he said he “almost always” went to the one in Perry, which was closer, until it shut down in June. FULL STORY
