Carroll American Legion Seeks Public's Help In Decorating For Memorial Day

Each year, the Carroll American Legion places flags throughout the community for Memorial Day, and members are asking for a helping hand from the community before and after the holiday. Throughout the week, the Legion will post flags throughout the community’s downtown district and along Highway 30 with help from local high school baseball teams. Legion Member RT Schreck says Friday night is when they really need volunteers. AUDIO
People of all ages can lend a hand, as these flags are smaller and don’t quite weigh as much as some of the other larger flags. Schreck says helping Friday is an excellent way for parents to teach their kids a little about the meaning behind Memorial Day. AUDIO
The next opportunity to help the Legion is Monday morning with the Avenue of Flags. AUDIO
Schreck says volunteers can expect the work to take about an hour or so during each timeslot, depending on how many people lend a hand. He adds the community has been outstanding in helping in the past and thanks volunteers in advance for their assistance.

Coon Rapids Bayard At Kuemper
In a game that took nearly 4 hours and featured 23 walks and 7 hit-by-pitches combined, Kuemper scored on a bloop base hit by Ethan Loew, scoring Carter Putney with the game ender in the bottom 8th. Both teams rallied throughout the game with Coon Rapids Bayard taking a 5-2 lead into the bottom 4th. Kuemper responded with a 5-run bottom of the 4th to lead 7-5. Both teams batted 10 hitters in the 4th inning that featured a combined 7 walks and 2-hit-by-pitches. Coon Rapids Bayard responded with a 3-run 6th to take a 8-7 lead but Kuemper tied it in the bottom 6th. Coon Rapids Bayard erupted for 5-runs in the top 7th and looked to be in control with Cade Behrens driving in a pair of runs with a single. For the second time in their first-three games, Kuemper scored 5-runs in the bottom of the 7th. This time it tied the game at 13. The Knights took advantage of 5 walks and a hit-by-pitch in the 7th, tying the game on a walk with the bases loaded. Coon Rapids Bayard put runners on 1st and 2nd in the 8th but weren’t able to score as Max Schon shut the door with help from Carter Putney making a great adjustment on a deep fly ball from Cal Heydon. The Knights came up in the 8th and got a lead off walk by Mason Knerl who was thrown out at 3rd base after stealing 2nd and trying to take 3rd when the ball went into centerfield. Carter Putney walked on the play, then stole 2nd base. Coon Rapids Bayard intentionally walked Benicio Lujano and Ethan Loew hit a bloop to shallow center. Kolby Culbertson charged in and dove to make the catch but the ball bounded away and Putney scored the game winner with 2-outs. READ MORE

Governor says 153 homes in Greenfield were destroyed by Tuesday’s tornado
by O. Kay Henderson | May 23, 2024

Governor Kim Reynolds says more than 200 Iowa homes were destroyed by Tuesday’s tornadoes, including more than 150 in Greenfield.
Reynolds and the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency toured Greenfield this morning. “We can give them all the data, we can show them the destruction,” Reynolds said, “but to really be on the ground and see firsthand and to listen to the stories is really beneficial.”
Reynolds submitted a request to the White House this morning for federal disaster assistance for four counties, including Adair County, where Greenfield is located. “In Adair County alone we had 153 major destroyed homes,” Reynolds said. “Montgomery had eight, Polk County 26, Story County 15 — for a total of 202.”
That’s a tally of flattened homes. Reynolds told reporters there’s no count yet on damaged businesses. FEMA director Deanne Criswell, who joined Reynolds for a news conference in Greenfield, said the agency will process the governor’s request for federal disaster aid as quickly as possible.
“As much as I’ve been watching the videos and seeing the pictures of the tornado damage, it just does not do it justice when you’re here on the ground and you can see the homes gone,” Criswell said, “or you can talk to a member who lost their home and they share their story about how they just barely escaped death.”
Criswell thanked first responders for their life-saving actions on Tuesday and offered advice to storm victims.
“The best thing you can do right now is to take a lot of photos and document the damages to your home,” she said. “We want to be able to have that information both for your insurance company and if and when a disaster is declared here, we’ll have to have that information to process any other types of assistance that are out there.”
Power had been restored to about half of Greenfield by midday today, according to the governor.
“I was on the ground yesterday and I can’t even tell you the amount of debris that has been collected and hauled off,” Reynolds said. “In some of those streets, it looked like a different place.”
Reynolds said there are a few people using the emergency shelter in Greenfield’s high school, but most storm victims are staying with family or friends.
