Goldman: If Trump destroys Fed credibility, gold could hit $5,000

The bank says the metal could hedge the increased inflation, currency weakness, and poor stock and bond performance typically associated with central banks run by politicians.

Gold could serve as a hedge for investors as President Trump continues his push to take political control of the quasi-independent Federal Reserve, analysts at Goldman Sachs say.

In a note published Wednesday, Goldman commodity analysts wrote:

“A scenario where Fed independence is damaged would likely lead to higher inflation, higher long-end rates (lower bond prices), lower stock prices and an erosion of the Dollar’s reserve currency status. In contrast, gold is a store of value that doesn’t rely on institutional trust. Should private investors look to diversify more heavily into gold, as have central banks, we see potential upside to gold prices even above our tail risk scenario of $4,500/toz, which itself is already well above our $4,000 mid-2026 baseline, given the very small size of the physical gold ETF market relative to Treasury bonds, at only 1%.

For example, we estimate that if 1% of the privately owned US treasury market were to flow into gold, the gold price would rise to nearly $5,000/toz, assuming everything else constant. As a result, gold remains our highest-conviction long recommendation in the commodities space.”

A romp to $5,000 — which, to be clear, Goldman analysts characterize as a “tail risk” scenario — would represent a roughly 40% increase from yesterday’s New York spot closing price of $3,559.26 an ounce, according to FactSet.

But the Trump effect has likely already helped bolster prices for the metal, which has risen more than 35% in 2025, supercharging performance of gold miners like Newmont Corp.NEM $74.98 (-0.25%), which has doubled so far this year. see full story

🍁 The Lake City Betterment Association is gearing up for its annual autumn celebration later this month, and the deadline to register for some of the planned events is approaching this weekend. The Lake City Fall Fest and Chili Cookoff is slated for Sunday, Sept. 14, in downtown. Association Secretary Kat Morris reminds parents to sign their kids up for the Fall Fest Pageant before the weekend is over. A big part of the Fall Fest each year is the hotly contested chili cookoff. Morris says they’ve made some changes this year to ensure there are no barriers for teams that want to enter. A central theme for Lake City’s Fall Fest is family-friendly fun, and Morris says that is the case again for 2025’s schedule. More than 30 vendors are expected to have stands set up around the square, and Morris says the kids will have all kinds of activities to participate in. Participants can also join in the scarecrow decorating contest, and stakes can be claimed on the south side of the square beginning Monday, Sept. 8. While all the activities, chili-tasting, and more are going on, DJ Erkenbrack will be providing live music on the square from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Again, Fall Fest is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14, in downtown Lake City.

🏡 Crews have started moving dirt earlier this week for a project Region XII Council of Governments (COG), in partnership with the City of Manning, is completing for a workforce housing duplex. The Manning City Council approved during the Aug. 19 meeting to sign over three city-owned lots located on Iowa Drive in the southern part of the community to be utilized for Region XII to create additional housing opportunities. City Administrator Dawn Meyer says this partnership benefits both Region XII and the city, as Manning was named a 2024 Iowa Thriving Community. Local Assistance Director for Region XII Chris Whitaker says Region XII has completed several workforce housing projects over the last five years but this is the first one in Manning. The dirt work started on Tuesday, which Whitaker says makes him hopeful that the building will be available next year. The Workforce Housing Tax credits was designed to provide tax benefits in refund of sales, service or use taxes paid to the developer during construction to help offset the cost of building more housing opportunities in Iowa communities. The Manning duplex will be a singular structure with two-units that span across the three lots.

The Lake City City Council has approved of the hiring of Mikala Dorman as the new City Administrator/Clerk. Dorman, a native from the area, was selected out of four finalist that were interviewed on Aug. 19. She has an accounting degree, along with other qualifications that made her selected as the ideal candidate for the position. Dorman will begin serving in the administrative role on Sept. 24, replacing Interim Janon Douglas and Lee Vogt who worked together to cover the position after the resignation of Jacob Matthews in March.
