🍜 Good Morning it's Friday!

😁 Happy Friday! Some say that October weather can predict the winter to come. If October is warm, February will be cold. If there’s a lot of rain in October, there will be a lot of wind in December… Others say the animals can also predict the winter to come; like when deer are in a gray coat in October, we can expect a hard winter.

The S&P 500 finished Thursday flat, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 was up only 0.1%, following an AI stock boost in the morning. The Russell 2000 fell 0.3%.
After a better-than-expected September retail sales report, traders cut their bets on further easing from the Federal Reserve during the upcoming November meeting, as recent data has shown that the economy is far from entering a recession. The bond market took a hit as a result. The 10-year yield jumped 8 basis points to 4.09%. On the longer-term end, the 30-year yield rose nearly 10 basis points to 4.39%, its biggest one-day jump since August. (Bonds and yields move in opposite directions.)
The stock market’s rise earlier in the day, bolstered by a slew of earnings beats, faded in the last hours of trading. Most sectors retreated. The utilities sector fell 0.9%.

Carroll Lions Club Ready To Host Hundreds During Friday's Soup Day Fundraiser

Today is the Carroll Lions Club’s annual Soup Day fundraiser, and organizers are excited to feed hundreds of people while also raising money for the community. Soup Day runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Carroll’s Graham Park Shelter House. Lions Club President Sondra Rierson says the event is the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year, and members are always appreciative of the crowds it draws. The all-you-can-eat meals are $13 for adults and $8 for kids 10 years old and younger. Rierson says they’ll have an excellent spread of hot soups for patrons to enjoy. The best part about Soup Day is that 100 percent of the proceeds support Lions Club projects in the area. The Lions Club typically sees around 800 people throughout the day during the fundraiser and generally raises between $4,000 and $6,000 from the event. Again, the Carroll Lions Club annual Soup Day is today from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Graham Park Shelter House.

🍂 Fall colors are nearing their peak across Iowa, with west-central Iowa expected to see the best display this weekend. Drought conditions and high winds in our area have caused some trees to change color early, and vibrant yellows will dominate the landscape. Sumac and vines add touches of red while the last of the fall prairie flowers are fading. Prairie grasses are expected to turn brown by week’s end. In northeast Iowa, cool nights have enhanced the bright reds and oranges of sugar maples and the yellows of aspens. North-central and northwest Iowa are already at peak, showcasing vibrant orange and red maples, along with yellows from ash, hickory, cottonwood, and walnut trees. Central Iowa will hit peak color over the next ten days, with yellows from a variety of trees and reds from sumac and Virginia creeper. The landscape remains mostly green in southwest Iowa, though native shrubs and some trees are beginning to show their fall colors. A link to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources fall color report is included here.
🐕️ The Crawford County Pheasants Forever is offering a free educational clinic for hunters to prepare for the upcoming hunting season. This Sunday at Yellow Smoke Park, an “Ask A Vet/Bird Dog First Aid Field” clinic will be held to answer any questions and teach hunters how to care for a canine hunting companion. Vice President for the chapter, Jake Segebart, says the board threw around the idea a couple of years ago, holding their first class last year. He says Dr. Shane Reinke from Lincoln Highway Hospital in Denison will be the speaker for the event. The clinic will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Lookout Shelter at Yellow Smoke. Segebart says they will be provided a free meal this year, as they learned from last year that this class tends to last a couple of hours due to the various topics discussed. more details
🚶 The Coon Rapids City Council approves the bid for the Riverside Trail resurfacing project during its Monday night meeting. Pave Grade LLC, out of Adel, has been awarded the contract to mill down the approximately 2.5-mile-long asphalt trail and resurfacing with a new layer. City officials first pursued the option to switch from asphalt to concrete for the nearly 30-year-old trail, but with grant funding unsuccessful, the council sought bids for other options to improve the trail at a lower cost. Pave Grade provided a bid of $409,589, with all the funding for the project secured pending confirmation on the amount from the Carroll County Board of Supervisors. The county board members pledged last fall $75,000 and will review and approve that amount during their next meeting on Monday. The remaining funding comes from the City of Coon Rapids ($90,000), donations from foundations and individuals ($230,000) and the Community Foundation of Carroll County/Grow Greene Foundation ($25,000). The resurfacing project is expected to begin in April of 2025, hoping to complete it by Memorial Day, weather permitting. Still, it will be finished before the next Fourth of July holiday.

Iowa conservation group close to securing unique wetland in Grimes and Granger

Grimes is growing fast. But beyond the Freddy's Steakburger and new housing developments, there's a rare, large parcel of wetland and woodland known as Brenton Slough that conservation advocates are trying to open to the public.
Why it matters: The 1,114-acre habitat is vital for migratory birds and endangered species like Blanding's turtles, says Joe Jayjack, spokesperson for Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF), which owns the land.
"To be able to get a parcel that size in the Des Moines suburbs is really rare," he tells Axios.
Driving the news: INHF, a nonprofit that works to conserve land, is in its final push to raise $8 million to transfer the slough to Polk County Conservation, which will build out trails and open it to the public.
The group purchased the land in 2023 and holds it while funding is figured out.
They hope a fundraiser Thursday will get them closer to raising the last $2 million
What it is: A slough, which rhymes with "grew," is a shallow swamp that usually backs up to a larger body of water.
Brenton Slough is one of only 15 in the state and connects with the nearby Beaver Creek. Its deepest point is just 3 feet.
How it started: The property was a game refuge for the Brenton family in the early 1900s. The family decided to preserve the land and agreed to sell it to INHF in 2023.
State of play: With the influx of money, Polk County Conservation will focus on wildlife preservation, adding hiking paths, bird-watching spots and educational events.
The county agency also plans to install a mixed-use trail that will connect to the region's larger trail system.
What's next: INHF is hosting Paint the Park from 5-7pm Thursday with a live painting and musical performance from Chad Elliott at the slough.
The event is free with a suggested donation of $25 per person. People may also donate online.
