It's Back-To-School Time For Area Districts; Carroll Police Chief Reminds Drivers To Be Extra Cautious For Next Several Weeks

Today marks the first day of classes for our area schools, which means a drastic change in traffic patterns for local communities. Carroll Police Chief Brad Burke says it is a night and day difference for drivers.Burke adds that motorists need to be watchful for more than the increased vehicle traffic, as many students walk or ride their bikes to school. Drivers will also notice more buses traveling throughout town and on rural roadways. Burke says it is critical to remember that passing a bus when it is stopped and its lights are flashing carries some stiff penalties. Burke says the best advice for everybody is to give yourself plenty of time, as mistakes happen when people are in a hurry. He recommends that residents who don’t need to be near the schools during drop-off and pick-up times avoid those areas. Classes begin for all the area schools on Friday, Aug. 23.

🥞 The Greene County Community School District wants to ensure all students have a great start to each school day by providing breakfast at no charge for every student this upcoming school year. Through an application process, Greene County CSD was selected to receive funding through the School Breakfast Program, administered by the Iowa Department of Education and the Child Nutrition Program, to provide a free meal at the start of each day to every student, regardless of income. With the research proving that poor nutrition affects learning abilities, Greene County administration and staff are proud not only to provide at least one free meal to students but also to relieve a bit of a financial burden off families in the district.
🏡 Gov. Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Economic Development Authority announced over $37 million in workforce housing tax credits this week, including several in the listening area. The 62 selected projects are expected to create over 2,000 residential units, helping to meet the growing demand for housing. In Jefferson, Origin Homes will receive $90,000 in tax credits and $28,008 in sales tax refunds to aid in the construction of three new units. Region XII Council of Governments was selected to build a duplex in Manning and three new homes in Schleswig and Odebolt, receiving a combined $179,880 in financial support from the state between the two projects. The final local award went to Huegerich Construction Inc. for nine new units in Sac City, receiving $332,827 in total tax credits.
🚧 It has been over 80 years since the current Sac County jail began operations, and county officials are bringing the question of building a new jail to voters this fall. During their meeting earlier this week, the Sac County Board of Supervisors voted to put the nearly $11 million jail bond referendum on the Nov. 5 ballot. According to the state jail inspector, the Sac County jail is the second oldest in Iowa, behind only Pocahontas County, which is currently building a new facility. Despite being well-maintained, the Sac County jail fails to meet current standards and poses safety risks to inmates, staff, and the public. The bond would fund a two-phase project, first to construct a new jail across the street from the existing one and then expand the law enforcement center into the former jail space. If approved, the project's tax impact is estimated at about $0.058 per $1,000 of taxable assessed valuation.
🚔️ Two Schaller residents were taken into custody after law enforcement discovered a marijuana growing operation in the basement of a home. On Aug. 16, Sac County Deputies were executing a search warrant at 509 South Perth St., attempting to obtain evidence in an ongoing criminal mischief investigation. Household residents 42-year-old Keegan Cross and 65-year-old Glenda Turnquist were detained while deputies searched the residence. In the basement, deputies discovered over 40 marijuana plants in various stages, grow lights, ventilated grow tents, and other materials to produce and maintain marijuana plants. Cross and Turnquist were taken into custody with set bonds of $5,600 and $5,300 respectively. Both individuals face charges of manufacture of a controlled substance, marijuana under 50 kilograms, a Class D felony, possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor, and Cross is facing an additional charge of interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor.

While buying your first home may be the classic American dream, those who stick to renting instead save an extra $1,000 per month compared with homebuyers.
A new report by Realtor.com® comparing the monthly costs of renting versus buying a starter home in July found that renters saved an average of $1,067 per month (or 61.3%) more than homebuyers. (For this analysis, a “starter home” is a unit with zero to two bedrooms.)
“With such cost comparisons, we are able to identify whether a market favors renting or buying,” notes Realtor.com economist Jiayi Xu in her analysis. “This is particularly important given today’s landscape, marked by elevated mortgage rates and still-high home prices, posing substantial challenges for would-be homeowners.” READ FULL ARTICLE

Why Iowa's agriculture companies are laying off thousands

Data: Federal Reserve Economic Data; Chart: Axios Visuals
Companies like John Deere and Bridgestone have laid off thousands of Iowa workers who build farm equipment over the last year, leaving deep cuts in urban and rural workforces statewide.
Why it matters: The cuts from some of the state's top employers indicate a larger revenue crisis for farmers, experts tell Axios.
The big picture: Farm machinery and equipment manufacturers employed 31,821 Iowans in 2022, according to a 2024 state ag economy study.
Those jobs pay better than most: an average salary of $63K in Iowa in 2020.
Catch up quick: John Deere announced 1,500+ cuts across its factories in Iowa, including Ankeny and Waterloo.
Bridgestone in Des Moines announced 216 layoffs this summer for workers in its agricultural tire section — its first local layoffs since 1990.
Kinze Manufacturing in Williamsburg along I-80 laid off 193 employees this month.
Zoom out: A recent slump in corn, soybean and grain prices is causing many farmers to delay investments in major equipment, Peter Orazem, an Iowa State economics professor, tells Axios. FULL STORY
