😁 Happy Friday! In August 1981, MTV launched and aired its very first music video: “Video Killed the Radio Starby The Buggles. Little did we know, that was the beginning of a beautiful era filled with big hair, questionable fashion, and music videos that made absolutely no sense (but looked cool doing it).
And yes— those chunky TVs, tangled cassette tapes, and VCRs that ate your favorite movie? They’re now considered vintage. 😬 You’re welcome.

Eli Lilly craters after disappointing trial results for its GLP-1 pill, despite cheery earnings results

This is the first quarter that Lilly’s GLP-1s outsold Novo Nordisk’s.

Eli LillyLLY $639.85 (-14.27%) dropped sharply after it reported disappointing trial results for its next-gen weight-loss pill alongside earnings results that crushed Wall Street expectations thanks to its blockbuster GLP-1 drugs that were already on the market.

Minutes before releasing its earnings results, Eli Lilly reported late-stage trial results for its GLP-1 pill, orforglipron, which helped patients lose an average of 12.4% of their body weight, which is less than a rival pill made by Novo NordiskNVO $48.04 (5.86%).

Shares plunged 13% in recent premarket trading.

It also reported sales of $15.5 billion, beating the $14.7 billion analysts were expecting, thanks to booming sales of its GLP-1 shots. That contributed to a strong earnings beat, with adjusted earnings per share coming in at $6.31 — significantly higher than the $5.60 analysts polled by FactSet were expecting.

The company reported $3.4 billion worth of sales of Zepbound, its weight-loss shot, and $5.2 billion of sales of Mounjaro, its diabetes shot. Both beat analysts’ estimates and mark the first quarter both shots outsold Novo’s respective drugs, Wegovy and Ozempic.

Lilly so far has been catching up to Novo Nordisk, which was the first to bring GLP-1s to market but has seen its sales decelerate in recent quarters. The company slashed its annual sales outlook last week, blaming compounding pharmacies for lower-than-expected sales of its weight-loss drugs. see chart

🏀 The IKM-Manning Community School District invites the public to celebrate the completion of its new gymnasium and building addition with a ribbon cutting and open house later this month. Workers broke ground on the $8.4 million expansion last summer, and the project included the athletic space, two maker-space classrooms, and a new commons area. The open house will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, at the IKM-Manning Middle and High School in Manning. A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will include comments from school board members and project leaders. Attendees will be treated to complimentary snacks and refreshments, and Ms. V’s Sno Cone Truck will also be on-site with sweet treats for purchase. The open house offers the public what is likely to be its only chance to tour the new addition before school begins, as it will not be accessible during the IKM-Manning open houses on Aug. 20 and 21. Several school support organizations, such as the parent-teacher organization, booster clubs for sports and fine arts, and FFA alumni, will host tables to share information and encourage involvement in the Wolves’ extracurricular activities. District leadership invites the entire community to help celebrate this milestone. Again, the IKM-Manning gym and school addition open house is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 18, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

🔥 The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is investigating a fuel spill into the Boyer River in Crawford County following a structure fire Wednesday morning in Dunlap. The blaze, which destroyed the Rockin K Solutions service station near the intersection of Highway 30 and County Road 37, led to the release of an estimated 1,200 gallons of fuels, oils, aerosols, and other products, according to the DNR. Officials say most of the released materials were burned up in the fire, but an unknown amount entered a nearby storm drain that connects to the Boyer River via a drainage ditch. As of Wednesday evening, no immediate impacts to aquatic life had been observed. DNR field office staff are on-site and are investigating the extent of the release and any potential environmental effects. The DNR encourages anyone who comes across fish kills or environmental damage related to the incident to contact the Atlantic Field Office at 712-249-9297.

STATE NEWS
Here are some new additions to the 2025 Iowa State Fair as part of $20M renovation project

Cooper Worth Des Moines Register

Officials with the Iowa State Fair have long said the most popular renovation requests involve restrooms and more shaded seating for fairgoers — who also wouldn't want more air conditioning, too?

Iowa State Fair CEO Jeremy Parsons says many of the renovations and improvements for the fair, which runs Aug. 7-17, address nearly all of those concerns. The fair is in the middle of a $20 million project to improve various structures and areas across the more than 400-acre fairgrounds.

Some of the projects, such as renovations to the Horse Barn, are in phase one of a two-phase development timeline, while others are on track to be completed by the time the fair opens at 8 a.m. Thursday.

"A bulk of the improvements for this year's fair were just to improve the overall experience for visitors," Parsons said.

Here are the big changes visitors should keep an eye out for when they visit the Iowa State Fair this year.

New sound, public address systems across the fairgrounds

While preparing for the 2025 fair, Parsons said staff identified that the grounds' wide public address system and the sound system for the Livestock Pavilion were lacking.

"We identified that if we needed to get out some sort of emergency announcement across the fairgrounds, campgrounds and parking lots, we really did not have the best system in place to do that," he said. "The new PA system is just one of the many initiatives we do each year to try to keep fairgoers safe."

Parsons said renovating the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion also was one of the key projects in the $20 million improvement project, which included equipping it with a new sound system.

(Charlie Litchfield/The Register)

"The Pavilion is one of our most iconic structures here at the fairgrounds, and one of the biggest complaints with it over the past several years has been the inadequacies with the sound system," he said. "We've replaced it with a brand new system that will make for a better experience for anybody taking in a show there."

The new sound system for the Livestock Pavilion cost $250,000 and the PA system cost $500,000, according to Parsons. see full story
