😁 Happy Friday!  Until 1912, first-place Olympic medals were made of solid gold. Now, they’re made with only about 6 grams of gold and a lot of silver. But this year, each medal will also contain a small piece of the Eiffel Tower in them, which is pretty cool!

Carroll City Council Hosts Special Meeting Friday To Discuss Potential Real Estate Purchase

The Carroll City Council has scheduled a special meeting for tomorrow (Friday) afternoon to discuss the potential purchase of real estate by the city. The council convenes at 4 p.m. at Carroll City Hall with only one item of business on the agenda, a closed session per Iowa Code 21.5(1)(j), “To discuss the purchase or sale of particular real estate only where premature disclosure could be reasonably expected to increase the price the governmental body would have to pay for that property or reduce the price the governmental body would receive for that property.” The council is not expected to take formal action after returning to open session. A link to the agenda is included here.

🏫 The City of Coon Rapids is partnering up with Thomas Rest Haven (TRH) to potentially use a portion of the nursing home facility as a daycare center. At Monday’s City Council meeting, Frank’s Design Group, an architect firm based out of Glenwood, was approved to survey the section of TRH to see if a daycare facility would be feasible. City Clerk Jessica Leighty says this would not be a city-run daycare but would be available for daycare providers to rent from TRH. Frank’s Design Group will be coming in to view the north wing of the building and create a floor plan that meets state codes and standards. With TRH not being at max capacity, the long-term care center is looking to decertify that portion of the building will be utilized to fill a need that the community has addressed.

🐍  The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is highlighting a little-known gem in Iowa: a never-plowed section of original prairie land near Manson. The 160-acre Kalsow Prairie State Preserve in southeast Pocahontas County is a rare and untouched remnant prairie in Iowa. Acquired by the Iowa Conservation Commission in the late 1940s, it served as a hayfield and pasture on the Kalsow family farm before its preservation. Surveyed by renowned professor Ada Hayden, the area boasts over 250 plant species, making it biologically diverse. Designated as a state preserve in 1968, it supports a variety of wildlife, including smooth green snakes, short-eared owls, and bobolinks. The prairie features numerous plant species, such as white prairie clover and prairie sage.

🪨  A Colorado-based exploration firm will soon begin seismic testing in Carroll County as it searches for hydrogen trapped in geologic formations underground. Twin Rivers Exploration LLC was founded in 2022 and recently completed land surveys in Webster County. The phrase “seismic testing” brings to mind mining crews and sticks of dynamite, but Twin Rivers Land Representative Chris Justice says their testing methods are much more mundane. Twin Rivers’ primary survey area is an approximately five-mile square grid with Lidderdale at its center. These vibro-seismic trucks will begin operating in the region from the week of Aug. 19 through the end of the month. Justice explains what will happen if they find suitable hydrogen-storing formations.

🛤️  The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is highlighting the success of long-term efforts to restore areas in Sac County throughout the Black Hawk Lake Watershed and Wildlife Management Area. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) have invested more than $80,000 allocated through the Inflation Reduction Act o of 2022 to maintain this public resource. The Black Hawk Wildlife Management Area features the 760-acre Black Hawk Lake and the 160-acre State Marsh. This area is beloved by boaters, anglers, hunters, and birders. Importantly, it filters nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen, preventing unhealthy algal blooms in Black Hawk Lake.

The Iowa State Fair's last church food stand celebrates 75 years

In the middle of the deep-fried, gluttonous world of the Iowa State Fair, a single church fair vendor is celebrating its 75th year of serving simple meals and coffee.

Why it matters: The biggest and priciest vendors get a lot of today's viral fanfare, but the West Des Moines United Methodist Church's volunteer operation stands as a testament to building community again and again, despite a changing congregation.

How it started: Since opening in 1949, there have been a lot of changes, says Ken Ferguson, a congregant who helps lead the effort.

  • Back then, church stands were abundant at the fair and featured younger congregations bustling with volunteers.

  • Over time, those stands dwindled as people aged and operations became harder — leaving just the West Des Moines United's stand, Ferguson says.

Zoom in: Today, running the stand requires filling over 300 volunteer shifts — a feat that's becoming increasingly difficult, especially for the more physical, eight-hour shifts, Ferguson says. FULL STORY
