St. Anthony Regional Hospital Emergency Department Earns Silver Award From American Heart Association For Stroke Care

The American Heart Association has recognized the St. Anthony Regional Hospital (SARH) Emergency Department for its efforts to improve stroke care and reduce health disparities in rural communities. Rural residents, on average, live three years less than their urban counterparts and face a 40 percent higher risk of heart disease and a 30 percent increased risk of stroke mortality. To address this alarming statistic, St. Anthony is taking the association's recommendations to heart and focusing on rapid stroke detection and treatment, which substantially impacts patient outcomes. The "Get With The Guidelines" award acknowledges hospitals that provide timely, evidence-based care despite the challenges rural hospitals often face, such as extended transportation times and limited staffing. SARH Vice President of Patient Services, Sara Gonnerman, says, "We are proud that the St. Anthony Emergency Department team is being recognized for the important work we do every day to improve the lives of people in Carroll and the surrounding communities who are affected by stroke, giving them the best possible chance of recovery and survival. We've made it a goal to make sure those hurdles do not affect the standard of care our stroke patients receive." Hospitals are measured based on compliance to guideline-directed care for intravenous thrombolytic therapy, timely inter-hospital transfers, dysphagia screening, emergency communication, brain imaging, and other metrics, with St. Anthony earning the silver award.

🏃 The City of Manning is looking to expand its existing trail to connect its Hausbarn Heritage Park to be included along the route. The current three-mile walking/bike path travels all through town, from Great Western Park on the west side of Manning to Trestle Park to the north and as far south as the IKM-Manning School building. The new trail extension will include crossing East Street, going through the Willow Creek Campsite, connecting to the Cobblestone Inn and Suites, and ending at the Hausbarn Heritage Park, allowing most of the city’s attractions to be reached by traveling along the path. This project is contingent on the city receiving the Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) grant through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which will be given to communities to help finance projects to boost and maintain natural and cultural resources.

👩‍⚕️  An Operating Room (OR) nurse at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital (SMCH) is a recent recipient of the DAISY Award, recognizing her for the exceptional care she presents to patients. Kaylynn Larson, BSN, RN, was nominated by a patient who Larson served as a prep nurse for a recent surgery. The nomination stated, “I couldn’t have asked for a better nurse. She was professional at all times, had a great sense of humor, and her kindness and knowledge of the procedure put me at ease. My time at Stewart Memorial went quickly, and my recovery has gone well. Kaylynn’s ability to reduce my anxiety was, I’m confident, a large part of that success” Hospital staff state that this is not the first time hearing positive comments from patients talking about Larson’s care. SMCH is proud to continue to display exceptional care with nurses like Larson and is glad to have her on the nursing staff team.

🏢  The Audubon County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Audubon Police Department are wanting to remind residents that the departments will not be available for walk-in public assistance starting next month through the end of the 2024 calendar year. With the construction being completed at the courthouse, the department will be off-limits to the public starting Aug. 5 at 8:00 a.m. If public assistance is needed, an officer can be scheduled to meet at several designated locations. To schedule an appointment with the Audubon County Sheriff’s Office, individuals may call 712-563-2631 or the Audubon Police Department at 712-563-2500. Both departments thank residents for their flexibility and understanding and will continue to serve the City of Audubon and Audubon County during this disruption.

🛤️  Union Pacific crews are looking to have tracks cleared and fixed so trains can back up and run on the main line after a train derailment caused a stop of operations. The incident occurred Monday evening around 5:00 p.m. between Glidden and Ralston, causing approximately three dozen train cars piled up and off the tracks. A Union Pacific spokesperson says the cause of the incident is still under investigation. Crews have been working around the clock to clear and fix the portion of the track that received damage and are expected to continue operations later this (Tuesday) evening. While all railroad crossings have been opened back up for travel, individuals are still advised to stay clear of the area to continue allowing crews to complete any cleanup and maintenance necessary to open the railroad back up for train traffic.

Dairy cows at the Woodbury County Fair in Moville on July 31, 2024.

The Iowa State Fair is set to start on Aug. 8. If it’s anything like some county fairs in northwest Iowa, there will be fewer dairy cattle on display.

Trenton McCabe and his Brown Swiss named Abigail won grand champion on opening day at the Woodbury County Fair in Moville.

“It's awesome,” Trenton said. “I was shocked because she wasn't acting as good as she did last year and they don’t always act like they do at home.”

Trenton McCabe of Moville is grand champion of the Woodbury County Fair Dairy Show.

The teen and his two-year-old bovine caught the attention of judge Fred Hall, a western Iowa dairy specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

“That young cow had a good mammary system,” Hall said. “That's 40-plus percent of the cow's value. It's the 'factory' that produces milk.” FULL STORY
