🎃 Did you fill your pillow case last night?

😁 Happy Friday! Happy Halloween, a day late. Here’s what you can do with the innumerable pieces of candy your kids brought home last night, after you’ve picked out your favorite pieces, of course.
1. Bake with it. There are dozens of ways to incorporate Halloween candy into baked goods and treats for the upcoming holidays.
2. Switch it. If you need a clever way to convince your young kids to give up some of their loot, tell them about the “Switch Witch.” She visits children who leave out bowls of candy and exchanges it for a small toy.
3. Freeze it! Freezing candy extends it’s life, and keeps it tucked out of sight so you’re not tempted to eat it. This way you can save it for movie night snacks, treats for goodie bags, even Christmas stockings!
OR, you can eat it. Whatever floats your boat.

Americans are so upset about the economy they can hardly enjoy all their toys and cheesecake
We’ve said it before, but when it comes to assessing how Americans really feel about the economy, look at what they do, not consumer sentiment surveys.
After all, Americans are increasingly unlikely to respond to polls.
Maybe that’s because they’re out shopping?
New numbers Thursday showed inflation-adjusted consumer spending rose 3.1% in September, compared to last year, the biggest annual jump since last December. report details

Carroll Drag Racer, Jeremy Demers, Looks To Lock Up Top Spot In NHRA Standings In Vegas

Pictured: Jeremy Demers (right) celebrates with his father, Larry Demers (left), following Larry’s win at the Gerber Collision and Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals earlier this season.
A Carroll-based drag racer, Jeremy Demers, is in Las Vegas this week as he looks to strengthen his position at the top of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) standings. Demers currently holds the highest ranking in the “Super Gas” Divisional, tied with a racer out of Division 2. Demers says he has a chance to take a solo lead during the Ford Performance NHRA Nationals this weekend. NHRA standings are a bit confusing for those who aren’t drag racing fans. Demers is leading in Division 5 heading into this weekend and has a chance to finish first in the overall rankings by season’s end.
However, Demers won’t be competing at either of those events. Drag racing is a whole different category from the traditional round-track racing seen in NASCAR or sprint cars. Demers says the track is a quarter-mile long and is all about power. Demers grew up racing with his father, Larry Demers, who is with him in Las Vegas this week. He says the two of them have built their team up from a garage hobby to national contenders.
Larry Demers has also claimed a few wins in his division this season. Jeremy Demers is also part-owner of NAPA Auto Parts in Carroll and Manning. He begins qualifiers on Thursday, and depending on his performance, races could continue through the weekend. Check out the schedule for the Ford Performance NHRA Las Vegas Nationals and here is the link to watch the races.

🐶 Sac City’s Friends of the Dog Park is presenting a “Strut Your Mutt” walk-a-thon to raise money to assist in the construction of a dog park in the community. This Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., everyone is welcome to the South Park Shelter House in Sac City for lunch of hot dogs and popcorn, then walk at your convenience; dogs are not required to participate. Barb Rench, member and organizer of the dog park project, says this is the first fundraising event, and she would love to see a safe spot for individuals to bring their four-legged companions. Anyone interested in contributing can pick up a “Walk-A-Thon” packet at any Sac City bank, the Sac City Public Library, or the Sac Liquor store. Rench says individuals can pledge so much money a mile or give a flat donation and participate in any way they wish. Door prizes available as well as gifts for the top three pledge winners. All of the proceeds will go towards establishing the dog park. FULL STORY
🐖 The Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation donates over $1 million in products to school districts throughout the state to tackle food insecurity, including ten local schools. What started back in 2012, the Power Snack program distributes 24,000 pork sticks to be available in different offices at school buildings to provide children easy access to protein when needed, as well as 96,000 coupons to participating students for families to receive four pounds of deli ham and four loaves of whole wheat bread. This $1 million investment will impact over 25,000 students and families throughout 83 school districts where Iowa Select employees live and work. Carroll, Denison, East Sac County, Greene County, Manson Northwest Webster, OABCIG, Paton Churdan, Schaller Crestland, Schleswig, and South Central Calhoun Community School Districts were among the participating schools in the Power Snack program, supporting health and well-being of students. Laura Noehren, Foundation Program Manager, says, “Power Snack serves as part of the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation and Iowa Select Farms’ long-standing commitment to Iowa’s children. Every child deserves nutritious, filling meals, and we aim to bring meals to those who need them the most throughout hunger-fighting programs.” more details
👮♂️ Lake View Police Chief George Athan is thanking the public and law enforcement agencies from around the area for their assistance in swiftly and safely recovering a missing dependent adult earlier this week. On Monday, Oct. 28, the Lake View Police Department responded to a report of a 28-year-old male leaving a residence of the 200 block of S. Blossom Street in Lake View. Athan says officers immediately issued an alert to surrounding agencies to be on the lookout for the individual, and the Sac County Sheriff’s Office, Sac City Police Department, Sac County Emergency Medical Services, Lake View Fire Department, and Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS) all responded, in addition to help from the public. He was quickly spotted by a DPS search plane near Mace Avenue and 290th Street, nearly 4.5 miles northwest of Lake View. Athan thanked every Sac County resident and agency who assisted in the search, saying, “This successful recovery highlights the strength of our community partnerships and the vital role of multi-agency collaboration in emergency situations.”

South Central Calhoun Vs Denver At Iowa Falls- Class 2A Region 1 Final
Denver 3
South Central Calhoun 0
25-7, 25-14, 25-20
South Central Calhoun made adjustments after a tough first set and played the top ranked Cyclones better over the final two sets than anyone they’ve faced in the postseason. The Titans knew they were facing a team that played at a quicker tempo than any of their opponents this season. Denver established Grace Mullihan in the middle early in the 1st set, building a 6-0 lead. The Titans closed within 8-3 on a kill by Jayci Graeve but struggled to slow down the middle attack or the quick push to Bailey Mullihan on the outside. Denver went up 13-3 but the Titans kept fighting, getting back-to-back kills from Brenna McAlister, pulling within 14-6. The Cyclones closed the 1st set on a 9-1 run to win 25-7. full report

A flooded community in northwest Iowa is in a rush to replace ruined homes
Iowa Public Radio | By Sheila Brummer
Published October 31, 2024 at 12:09 PM CDT

Construction crews work on the infrastructure of a temporary housing development on the east side of Rock Valley. City leaders expect FEMA to bring 78 units to this location — some with 3 bedrooms.
Four months after historic flooding forced hundreds from their homes in Rock Valley, work is underway to provide more long-term housing for those still displaced.

Tom Van Maanen grew up in Rock Valley and started working as city manager in 2001 after his father retired from the same position after 30 years. "These people are family, they're friends, they're acquaintances — I love this community." The map at City Hall shows the Rock River that snakes along the northside of town.
As he toured through his devastated hometown, Rock Valley City Administrator Tom Van Maanen reflected on the early morning of June 22, when the Rock River poured over a protective berm built during previous flooding and roared into neighborhoods.
“What we ended up getting was a flash flood on top of a flood,” Van Maanen said. “I can remember sitting in incident command and hearing all the radio calls about how the water was moving so fast. In fact, 46 people showed up with payloaders in the middle of the night to go house-to-house to rescue people by putting them in their buckets and getting them to dry land. We had one fatality — which is obviously horrible — but from what I was hearing, I expected things to be so much worse."

Water still covered the top of a berm and walking trail in Rock Valley two days after a catastrophic flood on June 22, 2024. City officials originally thought it gave way, but later said it held up and that the water level was just too high. The Rock River crested higher than a record set in 2014.
