4th Annual Carroll SuperDraft Returns Saturday To Carroll Softball Complex
The 4th annual Carroll SuperDraft returns to the Carroll slow-pitch fields this Saturday to raise money to support cancer patients and their families receiving treatment at the St. Anthony Regional Cancer Center. The group behind the SuperDraft, which includes Katie and Tad Decker, Katie and Kyle Cornelius, Nicole and Colby McCarville, and many others, has raised nearly $50,000 in just three years. Decker says those funds have already been used to help over 75 patients momentarily leave the stress of a cancer diagnosis behind them. AUDIO
Decker adds that one of her favorite parts about the SuperDraft is nearly 100 percent of the money they bring in goes straight back to the patients and their families. Examples include covering gas and grocery expenses, Christmas gifts for patients’ children, outings for the families, and any reasonable request they receive. Decker says the uniqueness of the SuperDraft also helps draw some attention. AUDIO
Decker says you don’t need to be a slow-pitch softball fan to enjoy the SuperDraft’s festivities. They’ll also have a Touch-a-Truck available during the tournament, where kids can get up close to firetrucks, ambulances, police cruisers, and even a helicopter ambulance, assuming the weather cooperates. The Carroll SuperDraft raised over $10,000 in its first year, more than $20,000 in its second, and topped $17,000 in its third year. Decker says the community support has been incredible. AUDIO
The tournament begins at 9 a.m. at the slow-pitch fields. The Touch-a-Truck is going on from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. There will also be a silent auction going on throughout the day, featuring dozens of items, such as signed Iowa State basketball, Blank Park Zoo tickets, a Templeton Rye barrel, and much more. They are also hosting a food drive, and fans are asked to bring a non-perishable food item with them to benefit local pantries. Trucker convoy to remember driver from Wall Lake found dead in field
by Dar Danielson | May 9, 2024
Truckers from across Iowa are asked to take part in a convoy for a western Iowa trucker whose body was found last month in a field.
Mitchel Riesgraf, the Iowa Chairman of CDL Drivers Unlimited organized the event to remember David Schultz, who disappeared in late November. “This convoy is to add pressure that people want answers. There’s been a lot of rise around this subject and around David Schultz case. We just hope that people actually care about the men and women that serve this country and keep everything supplied so we all can live nice lives,” he says.
Truckers plan to drive a continuous loop along Highway 20 from Early to Rockwell City for five hours starting at 3 p.m. Friday on the route that was last taken by Schultz. Riesgraf says he hopes Schultz’s family receives the answers they need. “Our hearts really go out to the Schultz family and all those directly affected.” Special prayers out there for those that were, you know, part of the search efforts,” Riesgraf says.
The state says a preliminary autopsy indicated no foul play in his Schultz’s death. Schultz’s family says a second autopsy is planned after his funeral on Friday morning in his hometown of Wall Lake.
