With earnings season done, we know what companies are thinking
They want to raise prices. That’s a bad sign for inflation, but also a reminder of why stocks are “the best of all the poor alternatives” for investors when prices surge.

Here’s one big takeaway from the more-or-less complete Q2 earnings season: corporate America is trying to pass along rising costs from the Trump administration’s tariffs in the form of higher prices.
Recent notes from analysts at both Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs spotlighted an uptick in chatter about price hikes during the six-week flurry of quarterly reports that essentially concluded yesterday, with AI chip giant Nvidia’sNVDA $179.58 (-0.77%) numbers.
“Tariffs have begun to weigh on margins,” wrote Goldman Sachs analysts in a note published this week. “And companies are using a variety of strategies, including renegotiating contracts with suppliers and raising consumer prices, to mitigate the impact.”

(Goldman Sachs)
Morgan Stanley market watchers saw the same dynamic at play, writing that during earnings season companies laid out a range of options to offset or reduce the tariff-related costs.
“Corporate America is adapting on multiple fronts (pricing, supply chain, and cost control) to cushion the impact of higher import tariffs,” they wrote. “The full effect is not yet evident and we continue to expect more firmness in goods inflation.”
They also noted that several recent, forward-looking surveys of executives suggest they intend to keep the price increases coming. full story

Carroll PD Welcomes Three New Officers: Mollhoff, Klocke, And Smith

The Carroll Police Department is once again fully staffed following the recent hiring of three new officers. Police Chief Brad Burke says Carroll is fortunate to be considered an attractive place to work for people in the law enforcement career field, as many departments can take months to fill vacancies. It has been since 2021 since the Carroll Police Department last had to hire an officer, which Burke says speaks volumes about the community’s support for law enforcement and the culture within the department. He also credits his staff for the added workload while the onboarding process is underway. Carroll’s newest officers include Tyler Mollhoff, Owen Klocke, and Jacob Michael Smith. Mollhoff was previously employed by the Rockwell City Police Department and has already started picking up shifts for the department. Klocke and Smith are both new to law enforcement and will need to attend the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA), starting next week. Burke says they have additional training after their certification. Following their certification, Klocke and Smith will complete a short training stint with local officers before being slotted into the rotation. The roster, which now stands at 16 full-time and one part-time officer, has grown by one following these hires with the addition of a school resource officer, which began with the start of a new school year on Monday. Burke says the initial response has been positive. Burke says he is optimistic that they won’t need to hire any new officers unexpectedly for quite some time.

Manning Regional Healthcare Center (MRHC) is proud to announce that Dr. Douglas McLaws, DO, has been selected as a 2025 Hospital Hero through the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA). Every year, IHA recognizes ten hospital staff throughout the state who have been nominated for their compassion and dedication to patients, going above and beyond not only at work, but for their community. This is one of the highest recognitions that can be given to a healthcare professional in Iowa. McLaws joined MRHC Family Practice Clinic in June of 2011, serving patients from pediatric and adolescents to geriatrics in family medicine, as well as preventative medicine, obstetrics, and endoscopic procedures. McLaws will be recognized during the annual IHA meeting on Oct. 7 and 8 in Des Moines, as well as during the MRHC Legacy Gala event on Nov. 15. The Calhoun County Economic Development Corporation (CCEDC) is reminding entrepreneurs throughout the county to apply for its Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) to support startups and help existing businesses expand. The application is open year-round for funding to assist with a variety of approved uses. CCEDC Executive Director Theresa Hildreth says that the RLF was established in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development to reinvest repaid funds in future loans for other local businesses. Hildreth says there are currently nine businesses throughout the county that have successfully secured funding through this program. She says there is an application process to determine eligibility. Hildreth says that the loan can be used for a wide range of purposes. Those interested in applying for the CCEDC RLF program can contact Hildreth. Again, that number is 712-297-5601. Hildreth says the CCEDC is extremely proud to present this loan opportunity to Calhoun County businesses and encourages them to apply, supporting the businesses that she describes as the true backbone of the county.

This new clock is Des Moines' latest performance art

The clock performs a show at the top of each hour, including a scene where its face is eaten by a robot. Video: Jason Clayworth/Axios
Des Moines' public art scene is ticking up with the recent unveiling of "TimePiece," a 3D LED installation by Des Moines-based artist and filmmaker Oyoram.
How it works: Unlike a traditional clock, "TimePiece" also functions as a performance.
At the top of each hour, a digital mechanical arm activates, removing and replacing the clock face in a choreographed display of light and motion.

Oyoram, the artist who designed this clock, is based a few blocks away in Des Moines' Historic Sherman Hill neighborhood. He also maintains a working studio in Paris. Photo: Jason Clayworth/Axios
Zoom in: Oyoram (Yorame Mevorach) is an internationally recognized visual artist whose career includes immersive video scenographies for Dior, Louis Vuitton, Cartier and others.
Locally, you may recognize his glowing "Hulking Giants" that adorn the corners of his Sherman Hill studio near Hoyt Sherman Place.
Behind the scenes: The project was supported by private donors and community groups.
If you go: It's mounted on the north upper walls of the Fitch Building, 304 15th St., facing Pappajohn Sculpture Park.
