Iconic Union Pacific's Big Boy Steam Engine To Stop In Carroll Sept. 4

Pictured: UP's Big Boy when it visited Carroll on Aug. 2, 2019.

Union Pacific’s beloved Big Boy No. 4014 steam engine is scheduled to make a whistle-stop in Carroll near the beginning of September on its “Heartland of America” tour. The enormous 132-foot, 1.2-million-pound engine operated from 1941 to 1961. Union Pacific began restoring Big Boy in 2013 and returned it to service for tours in 2019 as part of the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad’s construction. The Heartland of America Tour begins Aug. 28 in Cheyenne, Wyo. and includes a path east to Illinois before turning south to the Gulf of Mexico and returning to Wyoming via Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado. Big Boy’s whistle-stop at the Carroll Depot is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 4. The engine is expected to roll in from the west around 12:30 p.m. and depart toward Boone at 1 p.m. Safety during the tour is a high priority for Union Pacific, and they remind spectators to remain at least 25 feet back from railroad tracks at all times. More information on the Big Boy's 2024 Heartland of America tour is included here.

🥳 The Ar-We-Va Community School District is positively celebrating the start of the 2024-25 school year with a full staff, an increase in enrollment, and more. Superintendent Nathan Hemiller is excited to welcome staff and students back after the summer break, saying the year will start on the right foot by seeing enrollment increase for the second year. Hemiller says the teacher shortage is being seen in districts around the nation. That is why Ar-We-Va is celebrating the district, starting with all positions filled. Over the summer, the Ar-We-Va School Board met to review and update policies if needed. The attendance policy was updated regarding SF 2435, which requires more accountability from districts if a student misses more than ten percent of the school year. Hemiller says another policy change from last year will be access to cell phones for high school students.

📣 The Coon Rapids-Bayard Community School District dives into the start of a new school year at the end of next week, and staff is in the final days of preparing for classrooms and hallways to be filled with students after the summer break. CR-B welcomes a new superintendent this year, Tom Ridder, who is shared with the Glidden-Ralson Community School District. His contract began July 1, and he has spent the last two months learning as much as he can about the Crusaders. Ridder says it was busy around the school over the summer, even before he arrived, as a number of improvement projects were completed while the building was mostly empty.

🎒 Students in the Glidden-Ralston Community School District head back to the classroom at the end of next week, and staff members are more than ready to start the new year on the right foot. G-R welcomes a new superintendent, Tom Ridder, to the district this year, and he says he has been spending much of his time acquainting himself with the district and its teachers. Like many school districts, G-R’s biggest challenge is filling open teacher slots. Ridder says the district is sitting well heading into the 2024-25 school year. Teachers head back to work on Monday, Aug. 19, to ready themselves and their classrooms for students’ first day of school on Friday, Aug. 23.

👩‍🏫 The IKM-Manning Wolves are excited to get back into the building to kick off the 2024-25 school year next week. New to the district is the shared Superintendent with Tri-Center CSD Dr. Angela Huseman, who oversaw the IKM-Manning school buildings on Jul. 1, assisting with implementing a new policy regarding absenteeism, which comes down from state regulation. Huseman says the district is not fully staffed, as they are looking for a few more teachers with specific endorsements. But even with the openings, Huseman says other teachers have stepped up to assist until the positions have been filled.

😄 The South Central Calhoun Community School District is ready to bring its A-game, the “theme” for the 2024-25 school year, with new policies and staff to continue promoting a positive environment. Superintendent Brad Anderson is counting down the days to welcome students and staff back after the summer break. Anderson says he is incredibly excited to welcome several new staff members to the district this year. When school starts back in session on Aug. 23, Anderson says some renovations and updates have been completed to ensure the buildings stay well maintained. The biggest change this year will be implementing a no-cell phone policy during the school day in the district. Anderson reassures that the staff and administrators are fully prepared for this change and ready to handle any challenges that may arise to provide the best overall learning experience possible.

🚌 The Audubon Wheelers head back to class on Friday, Aug. 23, to kick off the 2024-25 school year. With the new year comes a new superintendent, Trever Miller, who officially took over as the Audubon Community School District’s leader on July 1. Miller has also served as superintendent at Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton since 2016, so he is familiar with the area. He says his first few months in Audubon have been focused on learning the ins and outs of the district and its team members. Most schools complete major construction projects over the summer, and Audubon was no exception. Most of the work was focused outside the main attendance centers, as the district completed a considerable renovation at the middle/high school last year. Miller says they did need to check some final boxes on that work over the last few months, but the bulk of the attention was on the district’s new bus barn.

Des Moines has experienced some pretty extreme weather events this year, but our summer temperatures have remained fairly moderate, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines.

Why it matters: After getting pelted with hail, thunderstorms and tornadoes, it's nice to walk outside and bask in some of the mildest Iowa State Fair temperatures in recent memory.

State of play: This year's active and wet conditions have contributed to the fair's coolest start since 2004, averaging 67.5° so far, Donna Dubberke, a meteorologist at the NWS's Des Moines office, tells Axios.

  • Temperatures will tick back up into the 80s this weekend, but this year's fair dates are still expected to rank among the top 10 coolest on record, which has helped boost attendance. READ MORE
