Off-the-charts stock market volatility is a sign we’re living financial history

The S&P 500’s daily ranges in each of the first three sessions of the week all rank in the top 35, based on data going back to 1982.

As any rabid “White Lotus” fan can tell you, it’s a common superstition that good and bad things tend to come in threes.

That’s what we’ve seen in the US stock market so far this week. It was a trifecta of exceptionally volatile sessions, with one relatively flat day, followed by one big loss, and capped off by the S&P 500’s largest daily gain since 2008 after President Donald Trump diluted most of his reciprocal tariffs for 90 days.

Monday saw a swing from a low of -4.7% to up as much as 3.4%, Tuesday from a high of 4.1% to down 3%, and Wednesday’s 10% daily peak came after a 0.7% intraday decline.

Those sessions all rank in the 35 biggest daily ranges for the S&P 500 based on data from Bloomberg going back to 1982, with Wednesday cracking the top five. To track the range, we measured the distance between the day’s high and low relative to the previous session’s closing price, in percentage points.

Hair & Wigs By Kim Partnering With Iowa Non-Profit To Raise Money For Cancer Patients To Buy Wigs

A local hair salon is partnering with an Iowa non-profit to raise money for cancer patients to purchase wigs through “The Mane Event,” happening next month. Strands of Strength is a 501(c)(3) established in 2011 by a breast cancer survivor to assist patients going through cancer treatment by providing financial assistance to cover the cost of a wig. A cocktail social hour will be held on May 2 at Carroll National Golf Club, sponsored by Strands of Strength and Hair & Wigs by Kim. Owner of Hair & Wigs by Kim, Kim Murrell, says there is much support behind the event, that tickets to attend were sold out within days.

Murrell says all the raffle items donated by local individuals and businesses will have something for everyone.

All the proceeds will go directly to Strands of Strength, which then provides vouchers to the St. Anthony Regional Hospital Cancer Clinic for patients undergoing treatment. They then take the voucher to Murrell at her salon to be fitted for a wig of their choice. Murrell says she has been working with hair for almost three decades now, and by partnering with Strands of Strength, she is able to contribute to the hope and confidence brought back to the patients by helping them “shine their crown.”

Murrell would also like to extend her appreciation to everyone who has purchased a ticket and donated items for the auction and monetary donations. She is so grateful and continuously amazed by the support the Carroll community continues to give to events like this. She is excited to see what the “Mane Event” will bring for local cancer patients and Strands of Strength. To purchase a raffle ticket or to donate, contact points for the three individuals have been included below.

💰 The Greene County Community Foundation (GCCF) has awarded nearly $250,000 for 22 projects throughout Greene County, with two emphasizing safety. The Greene County Community School District used funding from the foundation to purchase and install eight new emergency strobe lights throughout buildings in the district. The security strobe lights were placed in rooms like the gym, cafeteria, and other places where audible alerts may be challenging to hear. The lights will flash, giving a visual signal to warn students, staff, and visitors of emergencies and will help make the school safer. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office was another recipient of funding and recently purchased a new, enhanced drone to increase public safety. The DJI drone features upgraded 6-directional sensing and positioning, a night-vision FPV camera, stronger and brighter lighting, and much more. The GCCF grant was established 20 years ago as financial support for various projects from organizations that serve to enhance the quality of life for residents of Greene County.

📈 The City of Exira has been awarded a $650,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) to support a downtown revitalization project. The grant, part of the federal CDBG program administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), will fund improvements intended to strengthen the city’s central business district. The project is set to begin April 1 and is dedicated to façade overhauls on eight separate buildings. Exira’s project will be managed in partnership with Region XII Council of Governments, which assisted in securing the funding. IEDA officials say the revitalization will enhance infrastructure, preserve community character, and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors.

🚔 A Bayard man has been taken into custody after breaking into a Perry store and stealing over $10,000 worth of Pokemon cards and other items. According to Dallas County District Court records, 28-year-old Alex Michael McClellan was identified on video footage breaking into a business the night of April 6, located in the 1000 block of 2nd Street in Perry, disconnecting the cameras and taking several items which he later attempted to sell at a Des Moines business. McClellan admitted to being in possession of the items, totaling close to $11,000. McClellan is being charged with first-degree theft, a class C felony and third-degree burglary, a class D felony. He remains in custody at the Dallas County Jail on a $15,000 bond and is awaiting his preliminary hearing scheduled for April 21. Sukup Manufacturing becomes new title sponsor of Iowa Speedway IndyCar race weekend

Philip Joens Des Moines Register

Sheffield-based farm equipment company Sukup Manufacturing will be the new title sponsor of the Iowa IndyCar Race Weekend, the series and company announced Thursday.

Sukup Manufacturing is one of the world's largest grain storage and drying companies. The NTT IndyCar Series is scheduled to race at Iowa Speedway July 12 and 13, marking the fifth time in six years the series is scheduled to race twice in the same weekend at the 7/8-mile short track in Newton.

Sukup has previously been an associate sponsor during the IndyCar weekend at Iowa Speedway. It has also sponsored the track's Indy NXT race, the developmental series for IndyCar.

Sukup CEO Steve Sukup said in a news release that IndyCar is committed to showcasing the power of ethanol, which is made using corn grown in Iowa. IndyCar began using ethanol blends in its race fuel in 2006. Since 2023 the series has used 100% renewable fuels.

"We’re proud to support an event that celebrates innovation, performance, and the future of agriculture,” Sukup said in the release. “IndyCar’s continued commitment to using ethanol in its 100 percent renewable racing fuel showcases the power and potential of agricultural products in high-performance environments. It’s a natural fit for us to partner with a series that reflects the values of our customers and the communities we serve.” full story
